Back to school is all about lists and checking them twice! We asked parents and Irish school supply retailer Schoolbooks.ie to help us put together this list of school bag essentials.

In addition, we’ve compiled an all-important checklist to help you get organised for back to school. Just download and start the school year as you mean to go on!

Get Ready for Back to School

Our pick of the best school bags for kids

First things first, pick a school bag that works for your child and the level they are at in school. Books are heavy and a well fitted school bag is important for posture and comfort.

Once you have the school bag sorted, decide on a lunch box and drinks bottle, bearing in mind what pocket space you have available.

I was always a last minute panic school bag packer! My Mum would nag me for weeks before I went back to school to get organised and now I find myself doing the same with my own children. I always seemed to manage to have my school books (thanks to my Mum), but beyond that it was a bit hit and miss!

So my advice would be that a few weeks in advance of returning to school, check you have all the school books on the booklist and get them packed into the school bag. Then you are ready to get onto the other essentials that are needed.

Are you planning on buying a new school bag for your child? Here is our pick of the best school bags for kids this year, and we’re pretty sure your kids are going to love them as much as we do!

There is such an extensive range of school bags available, it can often be daunting trying to decide which one to buy – especially if you want it to last more than a few months.

While price is always a factor, durability and practicality are crucial too. Check that the inside compartment can fit the largest of your child’s books and folders – it is incredibly frustrating to find the expensive new school books all dog-eared by week two as a result of being squashed into the school bag.

Once the bag is filled with books, make sure your child tries it on – are the straps comfortable? Is the bag the right size for your child? Don’t leave this until the last minute or you run the risk of your child struggling with a heavy, uncomfortable bag all school year.

Are you trying to decide on the best school bag for your child? Along with it being stylish enough for them to wear, there are a few other essential elements to consider. As a parent of 2 children, in primary and secondary school, here are my tips on picking the best school bags for your child, to ensure comfort, safety and style! This article is brought to you in association with schoolbooks.ie, for all your back to school needs.

Picking the correct school bag for your child can be difficult given the massive choice and range of school bags on offer. Involve your child in the choice to ensure they are happy and follow our tips from parents to ensure you are happy!

Picking the Right School Bag for Your Child

#1. Weight of School Books

Picking the right School Bag

Depending on what school stage your child is at, the weight of their school books can vary greatly. I often see children struggling to school with weighty bags that look bigger than them.

It is essential as they move into older classes and have more books, that their bag is ergonomically correct for the stage they are at. Check for padding around the lower back and in the straps and plenty of space for all the books they require.

Don’t be tempted to buy a bigger school bag because it will work for a few years, it is better to buy the right size school bag for the books they have now and upgrade as you go.

Fashion and styles change too and what they may like today, may not be what they want next year, so it can be a false economy to try and cover several years with one school bag!

Another way to cut down on the weight of school bags is to buy soft cover folders and notebooks rather than hard cover ones. And if the budget stretches, you could look at purchasing a second copy of some of the heavier books second hand so that your child has one set at home and one for school, so they don’t have to carry them to and from school each day.

Bear in mind when choosing the best school bag for your child that the total weight of your child’s packed school bag, should not exceed 15% of their body weight.

#2. Adjustable Straps

school safety rules

Two shoulder straps are best as this puts less strain on the back, shoulders and neck muscles. Be sure to adjust the shoulder straps, once your child has all their books, stationery etc in their bag, to ensure your child’s posture is at its best.

Too long and your child will lean forward. Too short and they may lean backwards, putting more strain on the shoulders and neck.

The perfect position is where the bag sits comfortably between the shoulders and in the middle of the back. Having an adjustable waist strap also helps take the strain away from the shoulders and neck and distributes the weight into the pelvis and legs.

Schoolbooks.ie for All Your Back to School Supplies

Schoolbooks.ie has everything a busy parent might need for during the school year from school books, stationery, learning resources, lunch items and the right school bag to keep all your bits and pieces organised.

#3. Pockets for Everything

It is best to have a large centre pocket for less heavy books and a padded pocket to the rear for a laptop, tablet or very heavy books. Along with pockets for lunch, water, stationery etc.

Ensure the weight is evenly distributed throughout the bag with heavier items placed closer to the back and less weighty items placed near the front of the bag.

This will help to balance your child and not have them being pulled backwards or forwards by the weight.

#4. Weather Proof

picking the right schoolbag for your child

It is good if your child can walk or cycle to and from school or take the bus where possible. It fosters independence and they get time with their friends alongside getting some exercise.

Look for school bags that are waterproof or have a rain cover for days that are not so good. This will protect the items in the bag and also protect a large portion of your child’s back too!

#5. Cleaning and Refreshing

I have purchased school bags that can be placed in the washing machine. I tend to wash them during mid-term breaks and holidays. It helps to keep them looking good and smelling fresh too!

If your child’s school bag is not machine washable, simply empty out the contents and sponge it inside and out with hot soapy water before leaving it to dry. This is also a great way of having a clear out and getting rid of non essential papers, books and items you thought were gone forever!

#6. Educating Your Child

I don’t know about you, but on the rare occasions when I go looking for items in my children’s school bags, I find all sorts of wonders! From notes that should have been passed on, to water bottles and food pots that I presumed were long gone, there is a myriad of non essential stuff that they are ferrying too and from school daily.

From the very 1st day of their schooling, educate them to empty their school bags at least once a week and as they get into 2nd level, to only carry the books they need to and from school each day! It will really save them from potential back pain in the future.

School books are an essential item for children and can be high on the list of back to school costs. We have 11 school going kids between us here at Mykidstime and we have teamed up with Irish company The Book Haven to share our 5 top tips for buying school books.

Tips for Buying School Books

From primary school, through secondary school and into third level education, school books are always a substantial portion of parents’ back to school budget. There are a few tips and tricks that can help. Here we share our top tips for buying school books to help with the process.

#1. Buy Your School Books Early

tips on buying school books for back to school

Mum Caroline says “be sure to buy early”. Not only are you more likely to get the books you need but often retailers, like Book Haven, will offer seasonal discounts for the early purchase of school books.

#2. Look for Secondhand School Books

Mum Michelle says “it is worth looking out for school books in secondhand school book stores, you can make significant savings by buying secondhand”. Do check that you are getting the latest edition needed for your child. The best way to do this is to compare the ISBN number on the book list with the secondhand book.

You can also make money by selling your old school books too. Or at least get credits towards the cost of your next years school books.

#3. Get Your School Books Covered

Mum Jill says “if there is one piece of advice I would give on buying school books, it would be to get them covered”. This is especially relevant is you have several children in school who will need the same books.

“I have been that parent battling with sticky back plastic at 1am the night before school starts and it is no fun!”

Many school book suppliers offer covering as part of their service. And often, in June or early July, they have discounts on covering.

#4. Check with Retailers for Book Lists

The Book Havn Blog 2nd Image

Mum Emily recommends “checking online and in-store retailers to see if they have your book list”. It saves you trying to find it in the bottom of your child’s school bag and also means you will get exactly the books you need.

The other benefit of using the stores book list facility is that you can easily check availability and be notified when your school books are in stock.

Email your school booklist to info@bookhaven.ie and The Book Haven will upload your booklist and advise you of the Quick code and this will retrieve the full list.

#5. Leave it to the Experts!

Mum Fionnuala says “shop online and leave it to the experts! There is nothing more frustrating than setting aside time to buy your school books only to find some are out of stock and you have to go back several times. Or that you have inadvertently picked up the wrong edition of the school book you need and have to return to the store to exchange it”.

By shopping online for your school books you can avoid multiple trips to the book store. Their experts will select the correct editions of your school books and you can collect the order when all the books are in stock.

Online ordering has the added benefit of enabling you to order school stationery, school bags and other back to school essentials from the comfort of your home.

“If they have a delivery service, go for it” is Fionnuala’s final piece of advice!

School uniforms are the norm in many schools. Personally I feel school uniforms are a great way to avoid arguments in the mornings about what to wear. You will find that your child wears their uniform more than any other item of clothing. So it is essential that you get it right. Watch out for these things when buying your child’s school uniform and you will be sure to have durable, smart looking school uniforms for the whole year.

Tips for Buying School Uniforms

#1. Stain Resistance

buying school uniforms

Look for school uniforms that offer stain resistance. Kids will get messy, that is part of the fun of playing, climbing, sliding and eating their lunch quickly so they can get out to meet their friends in the school yard.

Keeping their uniform neat and stain free is the last thing on their minds, so give yourself a break and get uniforms with built in stain resistant super powers!

#2. Water Repellant

The weather is not always going to be warm and sunny and there will be days that your child has to walk, cycle or get the school bus when the rain is pouring down. Choose water repellant school uniforms to ensure they are not sitting in wet clothes for the morning after they arrive at school.

#3. Easy Care

Check care labels before you buy your school uniform. Things to look our for include:

  • Crease resistant materials
  • Non or easy iron shirts, tops and bottoms
  • Items suitable for washing at a lower temperature
  • Stay fresh technology to keep items fresh between washes
  • Permanent pleats built into skirts and pinafores
  • Anti bobble jumpers and cardigans

Having easy care items is essential to make life that little bit better when it comes to caring for school uniforms. I know for me, it is important that my kids uniforms look good wash after wash and that ironing is kept to the minimum!

#4. Room for Growth

buying school uniforms

While you don’t want your child looking like they are wearing their older siblings school uniform, it is good to allow for some growth.

Look out for school skirts, pinafores and trousers that have extra material built into the hems so that can be taken down as your child grows.

Adjustable waists and cuffs are also great, as they allow for growth and comfort from the beginning of the school year right through to the end.

#6. Durable

Let kids be kids and buy school uniforms where they can run, jump and play with their friends day in day out without the worry of the usual wear and tear. Look for StayNew technology that helps avoid bobbling, fading, stretching and keeps uniforms looking like new wash after wash.

#7. Scuff Resistant

Have you ever worried about your child’s schoolbag and how heavy it is? Or maybe you’re in the market for a new school bag, but not sure which provides the best back support for your child? Here David Fitzgerald from Dublin Physiotherapy shares his 10 tips for school bag safety.

Back to school time is a good time to think about school bag safety and your child’s long-term musculoskeletal welfare.

One of the most important factors to bear in mind about that schoolbag safety is the duration for which the bag will be carried. A couple of minutes from schoolyard to classroom would be unlikely to cause harm, even if heavily loaded, whereas 20 minutes with 20% more than the recommended load with increased the risk factor substantially.

Recommended Weight Tolerance

The recommended weight tolerance should be no more than 15% of your child’s body weight.

This can be calculated simply by

  1. Measuring child’s body weight
  2. Measuring child’s and schoolbag weight
  3. Subtract 1 from 2 to get the bag weight (alternatively weigh the bag separately)
  4. Calculate the percentage by dividing the bag weight by the child’s weight and multiply the answer by 100

Example: Child weight 100 lbs, bag weight 20 lbs, 20/100 = 0.2 X 100 = 20% (so the bag is 5% over weight)

10 Tips for Schoolbag Safety

7 Best School Bags Recommended by parents

There are several aspects of bag design which help to distribute and absorb load and thereby minimize musculoskeletal stress. The following is a list of things to lookout for when selecting and using a backpack or bag.

#1. Make sure the bag has broad straps

Broad straps distribute the pressure across the shoulders more evenly. This reduces the chances of compressing the muscles joining the neck and shoulder and irritating the nerves which are located in this area.

#2. Look for padded straps

Padded straps at least in the contact points around shoulders will help with load distribution and minimize the risks outlined above.

#3. Check the size

The schoolbag should be sized relative to the torso of a child. An easy visual assessment would see the bag located between the base of the neck and above the waistline. The actual capacity of the bag (measured in liters) can vary quite considerably depending on the number of pockets or chambers included.

#4. Middle or side compartments are better

Compartments located in the middle or sides of the bag are generally better than ones added onto the back. In general the deeper the bag from front to back the bigger the leverage on the spine and more muscle work would be required to balance the load.

#5. Is there a body strap around the base?

A body strap around base of the bag is ideal but less commonly found on most schoolbags. This helps by providing another point of attachment onto the body and also helps to anchor the bag in position thereby reducing muscle effort required to stabilize the bag.

#6. Filling the bag up

Place the heaviest items / books closest to the child’s back to reduce leverage on the spine.

#7. Pack bag contents tightly

Try to pack bag contents tightly to minimize movement within the back. This helps to reduce unexpected pressure and a change of bag position on the back.

#8. Use both shoulder straps

To ensure even weight distribution make sure that both shoulder straps are used to distribute the weight evenly.

#9. Tighten the shoulder straps

Make sure the shoulder straps are sufficiently tight to prevent bag hanging away from the spine. This creates longer leverage and requires more counteracting muscle work.

#10. Planning bag load

It is worthwhile purchasing a bag which has compartments which can be used to store items which need quick and easy access to ie pens, pencils sharpeners, rulers, lunch box etc. This prevents constant rummaging through the bag.

And Finally

One final note is that if you see your child incline forwards to counterbalance the bag then that’s a sign that they are unable to manage the weight even if it falls within the recommended guidelines.

Unfortunately, some factors are outside parental control regarding the number of books required, storage and transport so it may not always be possible to conform to the ideal.

I hope this article provided some useful information to allow you make informed decisions regarding schoolbag safety for your child. If in doubt, your nearest Chartered Physiotherapist will be able to advise you.
