Are you planning on buying a new school bag for your child? Here is our pick of the best school bags for kids this year, and we’re pretty sure your kids are going to love them as much as we do!

There is such an extensive range of school bags available, it can often be daunting trying to decide which one to buy – especially if you want it to last more than a few months.

While price is always a factor, durability and practicality are crucial too. Check that the inside compartment can fit the largest of your child’s books and folders – it is incredibly frustrating to find the expensive new school books all dog-eared by week two as a result of being squashed into the school bag.

Once the bag is filled with books, make sure your child tries it on – are the straps comfortable? Is the bag the right size for your child? Don’t leave this until the last minute or you run the risk of your child struggling with a heavy, uncomfortable bag all school year.

We are always being told to get kids reading from an early age, but do we really understand the benefits of reading for children?

We have teamed up with Schoolbooks.ie to do the research. Read on to get the lowdown on why you should be encouraging your child to get reading.

From creativity and confidence to empathy and concentration the list of benefits is long. Here are just six to start you off on your journey of discovery. And how you can help encourage your kids to read more. We have included great recommended reads, all parent and child approved, to help too.

Inspiring your child to read more is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. It will continue into adulthood and will help them in ways you may not even imagine. There are so many amazing books out there suitable for all ages, abilities and interest areas. I love nothing more than to hear my kids suddenly burst out laughing as they are reading, knowing they are enjoying it so much.

Have Your Say

Don’t miss the chance to have your say! We’re looking for parents to get involved and give their feedback on all aspects of family life.

Benefits of Reading for Your Child

#1. Increases Their World and Imagination!

Reading can take children (and adults!) on magical journeys. Through reading, children learn about people, places and events outside their own experience. They are exposed to ways of life, ideas and beliefs about the world which may be different from those which surround them. Reading lets children learn about different countries and cultures and encourages their imagination to grow.

Children naturally have vivid imaginations and reading will nurture and support their creativity. Creativity is very important for developing interests and ideas, as well as building confidence. David Walliams books are wonderful reads for kids of all ages, laugh out loud funny.

#2. Increases Vocabulary & Confidence

We have all heard the phrase ‘Practice makes perfect’ many times. But in this case it really does. Children who read from a young age, invariably get better at reading. This builds confidence to attempt more difficult books.

The vocabulary children gain from reading cannot be underestimated. Children will use words they have just read to understand it’s meaning in everyday life – sometimes with quite funny results. Captain Underpants is a big favourite in our house and boy we have had some funny utterances as a result.

#3. Increases Concentration

Many children find it difficult to concentrate for long periods, hey even some adults do too! Reading encourages children to get lost in a story, thus focusing them on one task for a period of time.

In order to fully understand what is being read, a child needs to devote 100% of their attention to the words and this is how concentration is developed. One of the many benefits of reading that is appreciated in all aspects of their lives as children grow into adulthood.

My eldest has recently discovered the world of Harry Potter. The writing in the books is smaller than she is used to and they are a step up from her regular reading. But her concentration levels have definitely increased as she is so involved with the story!

Feed the Bookworm at Schoolbooks.ie

Encourage your little bookworms to love reading and give them the joy of a new book.

#4. Helps Develop Empathy

We all know that a good plot and well written story will draw you into a book. But it is great characters that you can identify with that will really pull at the heart strings and make you feel empathy.

We recently watched the movie Wonder and days later in our local bookshop my 8 year old spotted a copy of the book and had to have it. He is really enjoying it and comes to ask me questions regularly about different things that happen in the book and how he feels about them.

Children will often identify with characters in books – whether it be a child who is afraid of something or who has done something brave. We all want to be the person who gets over their fears and achieve great things.

There are also characters and stories that we will have empathy for, a friend or indeed themselves may be going through a similar situation to that in the story. Sometimes this can enable them to find a solution to a problem they are having, or at least feel like they are not alone. The written word can empower them with the right vocabulary to voice concerns or thoughts to those around them.

#5. Ultimate Solution to ‘I’m Bored’

benefits of reading

If you read, you are never alone and have no reason to ever be bored! Hours can be spent with a good book and it can take you away from whatever is going on around you and transport you to a new world.

One of the amazing things about books and reading is the wide availability of topics on offer. There are books on every subject and topic available from libraries, bookshops and online. Why not start your child’s journey today?

#6. Improves Schoolwork

Not only does literacy improve confidence in language subjects, it improves schoolwork across the board.

The obvious ones are history, geography, science where text is read and important points are picked out to be remembered. But even subjects like maths benefits from an ability to read and understand a question.

When your child starts school for the first time or moves school it can be a bit intimidating the first time you reach the school gates and are wondering who to talk to. Here’s some advice on how to survive school gate politics:

#1. Smile, Smile, Smile

Even if you aren’t feeling the love from another parent, just smile nicely. You may end up getting a smile back too.

#2. Try to Include Others In Conversations

If you know another parent and are talking to them, and you see a 2nd parent standing alone nearby it’s nice to involve them in the conversation.

“Be the one to step out and initiate conversation, say hello, give a quick smile. Who cares if they respond or whatever at least you have been polite and that’s all. If someone doesn’t smile or talk to you don’t let that rob you of being a happy person” – Olivia L

#3. Avoid Gossip

Nobody likes to be gossiped about so don’t gossip about people yourself. If you do gossip, you can be sure it will come back to haunt you.

#4. Be Kind to Other Parents

Try not to judge other parents. Maybe the woman running in looking like a mess has an ill parent to care for as well as her children to get to school. Maybe the dad dropping his kids off looking grumpy has a stressful job.

“Kindness and understanding go a long way. Just smile and be gentle. If they still don’t like you, well that’s their problem. But they won’t have a reason besides their own jealousy to deal with, to be rude. You have to get along with the other parents, because at the end of the day, it’s the children that suffer if you don’t.” – Desii R

#5. Allow Time for Friendships

You don’t always click with people the first time you meet them. Sometimes it takes a while to get to know people.

You might find these useful: 20 Tips for your Child Starting School and Tips for a Successful Transition to Secondary School

#6. Time Your Arrival

If school gate politics are really bugging you then time your arrival so you don’t have to hang about, just whisk your child in and whisk yourself out.

#7. Leave Any Bad Feelings Behind

If people do try to make you feel bad, just walk away from school and leave the bad feelings behind at the school gate. Remember you came to meet your kids and they were so pleased to see you, so just focus on that.

#8. Ignore, Ignore, Ignore

Remind yourself that you don’t need to involve yourself in politics, you don’t have to be mean to other people to fit in and you don’t need other people’s approval either. Just ignore it all, keep your smile on and concentrate on your child.

“I ignore them, I have friends and colleagues, I don’t need their approval for my life.” – Rachel M

#9. Be Yourself

What more can we say. Just be yourself, hold your head up high and ignore the politics. Life is too short!

Are you already stressed thinking about the kids going back to school? Have you a million and one things to do but don’t know where to start? We’ve got you covered with 21 top tips for making back to school night super easy.

Getting back to school and routine is always difficult. With our top tips for making back to school night super easy, you will hopefully find that everyone is more relaxed and that easing back into routine is a little easier.

Back to School Night Tips from Parents

About 2 weeks to go…

#1. Check your kids physical and mental health

Book any doctor or dentist appointments and clear up any issues that may affect your child’s ability to return to school on time.

#2. Order or buy all your final school supplies

Check each child’s booklist and ensure you have everything ordered together with the stationery needs. There is nothing worse than realising the night before that they are missing an essential book or tool.

Don’t forget school bags too. Check if your child needs a new one for the coming year or if last years just needs a quick clean. You don’t want to get to back to school night and discover school bags need cleaning or don’t fit books!

You Have Mail!

Get our best content direct to your inbox! You’ll receive quick and easy recipes, fun ideas to entertain the kids, parenting tips, great competitions, as well as offers from brands we trust.

#3. Cover and label the school books

Book covering is a great resource offered by many online retailers. I have often sat on back to school night covering books wishing I had got them covered when I ordered them!

Many books have to be brought to the schoolroom on the first day and left there, so they need to be clearly labelled with the child’s name in advance. Personalised labels are a quick and easy way to label all your child’s books and belongings.

#4. Label belongings

Don’t forget to label or write your child’s name with a laundry pen on all their belongings, clothes, shoes, pencil cases, coats, bags, lunch boxes, bottles etc. anything that can get left behind!

#5. Check the School Uniforms

buying school uniforms

Check all the school uniforms to make sure you have everything you need. Experience tells me that getting these early is your best bet as you may not get the sizes, colours etc. you need if you leave it too late. Don’t forget the gym gear as well.

When buying your school uniform, look for items with extras as standard. For instance at M&S many of their uniform fabrics are stain resistant, water repellant and crease resistant.

You’ll also find innovative sizes and fits including Plus fit (6cm wider in the body), Slim fit (4cm narrower in the body), as well as shorter and longer lengths on trousers and skirts. And clever design features like adjustable cuffs.

#6. Consider visiting the school in advance with your child

This is especially for those first timers. They may be so overwhelmed on the first day that a visit shortly in advance will help demystify the venue and alleviate their fears.

#7. Freeze a few dinners for that first week back to school

Make a few double batches as you cook the week before and save and freeze the 2nd batch.

This will help you and the family get back into a routine and juggle work and homework commitments.

2 to 3 days to go…

#8. Re-establish bedtime routines!

During those summer evenings the kids all tend to stay up later and that is fine if they can laze on in the morning. You want to avoid exhaustion and tension on back to school morning so it’s advisable to get those bedtime routines back in place a few days in advance.

#9. Clear your own schedule

If possible, for those first few days back to school, try and reschedule work travel commitments or meetings so that you can focus on the task at hand of getting the kids back and settled.

Some parents like to get a school year organiser at this time to fill in key dates and keep track of everyone’s activities and schedules.

#10. Have a dedicated storage area

Identify an area in your home, hallway, closet where the inevitable back packs, gym bags and coats will go. Make sure everyone knows where this is in advance and ideally give everyone a dedicated spot/coat hook!

#11. Identify some healthy back to school lunch box options

Best Lunchboxes for kids lead

A child’s mental ability will be determined by good, healthy food. So do your preparation for the first week back by stocking up on some healthy lunchbox fillers.

You might find these useful:

#12. Start a checklist

Start putting a morning and evening checklist together and put it on the fridge. This will help everyone know in advance what needs to be done and in what order.

With back to school on the horizon, it’s time to get creative and keep the kids amused with these fun back to school colouring pages for kids!

The Night Before

#13. Lay out the school outfit for each child

This should include shoes, bags, coats etc. This will avoid any morning panics about where everything is and ensure calm is maintained.

#14. Make the lunches!

I know it’s a chore but it will save you time and it’s one less thing to do on the first morning back.

#15. Have a family meal together

Having a family meal together, can be a nice way to welcome the new school term. Get the kids to choose the menu, and even help you prepare the dinner.

Sitting around the table together will allow for conversation, and a chance to discuss any issues or fears about the start of term too.

#16. Avoid technology

I know this can be a major obstacle in most modern homes – but if you can replace that time with a family meal followed by an activity together, e.g. a board game or card game, everyone will be a whole lot calmer and get to bed on time.

#17. Set the alarm clocks!

Be school ready. Ideally set 2 alarms in case one doesn’t go off. The last thing you want is to sleep in on the first day back to school!

We set our alarm clocks 15 minutes early during the first few days back just to get back in the routine and not have everyone rushing and stressed.

#18. Prepare a healthy breakfast

healthy breakfast ideas

Breakfast is one of the most important meals for the day for school kids, and skipping breakfast can set them on the wrong track.

Get organised the night before by setting out cereal bowls, chopping up some fresh fruit or prepare your ingredients for a smoothie. Have some cereal bars at the ready in case something does go wrong.

If you need some inspiration beyond the same cereal:

#19. Write a “love note”

It can be a stressful time going back to school, especially for the little ones. Write a little note and pop it into their lunchbox telling them how proud you are of them. It’s guaranteed to get a smile and perk up their day!

#20. Give your kids a hug!

Never underestimate the value of a good hug – it does wonders for their self esteem, knowing that you are there for them, no matter what.

#21. Relax!

If you get stressed your kids will too! Take a few deep breaths and get some fresh air.

However, with your preparation done you should have avoided the majority of potential pitfalls and back to school night and day should be child’s play!

Are you trying to decide on the best school bag for your child? Along with it being stylish enough for them to wear, there are a few other essential elements to consider. As a parent of 2 children, in primary and secondary school, here are my tips on picking the best school bags for your child, to ensure comfort, safety and style! This article is brought to you in association with schoolbooks.ie, for all your back to school needs.

Picking the correct school bag for your child can be difficult given the massive choice and range of school bags on offer. Involve your child in the choice to ensure they are happy and follow our tips from parents to ensure you are happy!

Picking the Right School Bag for Your Child

#1. Weight of School Books

Picking the right School Bag

Depending on what school stage your child is at, the weight of their school books can vary greatly. I often see children struggling to school with weighty bags that look bigger than them.

It is essential as they move into older classes and have more books, that their bag is ergonomically correct for the stage they are at. Check for padding around the lower back and in the straps and plenty of space for all the books they require.

Don’t be tempted to buy a bigger school bag because it will work for a few years, it is better to buy the right size school bag for the books they have now and upgrade as you go.

Fashion and styles change too and what they may like today, may not be what they want next year, so it can be a false economy to try and cover several years with one school bag!

Another way to cut down on the weight of school bags is to buy soft cover folders and notebooks rather than hard cover ones. And if the budget stretches, you could look at purchasing a second copy of some of the heavier books second hand so that your child has one set at home and one for school, so they don’t have to carry them to and from school each day.

Bear in mind when choosing the best school bag for your child that the total weight of your child’s packed school bag, should not exceed 15% of their body weight.

#2. Adjustable Straps

school safety rules

Two shoulder straps are best as this puts less strain on the back, shoulders and neck muscles. Be sure to adjust the shoulder straps, once your child has all their books, stationery etc in their bag, to ensure your child’s posture is at its best.

Too long and your child will lean forward. Too short and they may lean backwards, putting more strain on the shoulders and neck.

The perfect position is where the bag sits comfortably between the shoulders and in the middle of the back. Having an adjustable waist strap also helps take the strain away from the shoulders and neck and distributes the weight into the pelvis and legs.

Schoolbooks.ie for All Your Back to School Supplies

Schoolbooks.ie has everything a busy parent might need for during the school year from school books, stationery, learning resources, lunch items and the right school bag to keep all your bits and pieces organised.

#3. Pockets for Everything

It is best to have a large centre pocket for less heavy books and a padded pocket to the rear for a laptop, tablet or very heavy books. Along with pockets for lunch, water, stationery etc.

Ensure the weight is evenly distributed throughout the bag with heavier items placed closer to the back and less weighty items placed near the front of the bag.

This will help to balance your child and not have them being pulled backwards or forwards by the weight.

#4. Weather Proof

picking the right schoolbag for your child

It is good if your child can walk or cycle to and from school or take the bus where possible. It fosters independence and they get time with their friends alongside getting some exercise.

Look for school bags that are waterproof or have a rain cover for days that are not so good. This will protect the items in the bag and also protect a large portion of your child’s back too!

#5. Cleaning and Refreshing

I have purchased school bags that can be placed in the washing machine. I tend to wash them during mid-term breaks and holidays. It helps to keep them looking good and smelling fresh too!

If your child’s school bag is not machine washable, simply empty out the contents and sponge it inside and out with hot soapy water before leaving it to dry. This is also a great way of having a clear out and getting rid of non essential papers, books and items you thought were gone forever!

#6. Educating Your Child

I don’t know about you, but on the rare occasions when I go looking for items in my children’s school bags, I find all sorts of wonders! From notes that should have been passed on, to water bottles and food pots that I presumed were long gone, there is a myriad of non essential stuff that they are ferrying too and from school daily.

From the very 1st day of their schooling, educate them to empty their school bags at least once a week and as they get into 2nd level, to only carry the books they need to and from school each day! It will really save them from potential back pain in the future.
