When it comes to seasons, it doesn’t get more magical and kid-friendly than winter. From snowmen and icicles to the holidays and hot chocolate, no matter where you live, winter is a great time to be a kid.

Now, with cold(er) weather comes the constant struggle to find fun, kid-friendly indoor activities that will provide hours of safe and creative entertainment.

Arts and crafts provide a great way to connect with kids and build memories that often last far longer than the items produced through these activities. So whether you’re making these shirts with your children, your nieces, nephews, or friends, or the littlest family members, these kid-friendly DIY t-shirt projects will provide hours of fun and some wonderful frosty fashion items for the winter season!

3 Kid-Friendly DIY T-Shirt Projects for Winter

One craft that we are extremely partial to is updating t-shirts and sweatshirts to give them a new lease of life. Not only is this a fun kid-centric activity, but it also leaves you with winter-friendly clothes, which are always in demand.

Additionally, t-shirt and sweatshirt crafts give kids a sense of pride in what they’ve created and help with fine motor skills. These crafts also lead to winter-friendly wardrobe items that you won’t have to fight your kids to put on.

So, now that we’ve sold you on the fun and excitement that t-shirt and sweatshirt-making hold, let’s give you three ideas for DIY t-shirt projects for the kids to do this winter season.

Some Craft Do’s & Don’ts

DIY T-Shirt projects for kids

With all of the crafts we’re about to mention, we have a few guiding rules:

Always protect your surfaces with newspaper, craft paper, old fabric, or any protective barrier that will preserve your tables, countertops, floors, and furniture. While many fabric paints and fabric markers may say that they are semi-permanent or non-stainable, it can be challenging to get these paints or markers off of couches or out of floors without causing damage.

Remain aware of your kids’ ages and abilities. If you have small kids, be careful with paints and other materials that can easily be ingested or placed in the eyes and ears. For anything like scissors or glue, 12 years old is usually the age at which kids can safely use these tools with limited supervision, but we recommend keeping kids under 12 away from anything too sharp or too hot.

Have fun! The best part about crafts is that they offer a fun way to bond with family and friends. Make sure that you and your kids have fun and stay creative throughout the craft, and don’t be afraid to make your adult version of these winter shirts.

Frosted Snowman DIY T-shirt

DIY T-Shirt projects for kids

One of our favourite t-shirt or sweatshirt-making ideas for kids is turning an old t-shirt or sweatshirt into a snowman-adorned winter staple.

For this craft, you can find everything you need at your local craft store. You will need

  • White puffy paint
  • Glitter
  • Fabric markers
  • Any other embellishments (rhinestones, fabric pieces, etc.) that your kids want to include.

Using the puffy paint as your base, you can have your kids make fun snowmen (or snowwomen!) that are washable, durable, and textured to create a fun look.

Once the paint has been applied and has dried, decorate the rest of the shirt with glitter to give the appearance of a snowy wonderland. Embellish your design using things like fabric markers or rhinestones to personalise your shirt and to let your tiny artists channel their creative power.

We love this snowy tribute to winter, and, as a bonus, puffy paint is highly tactile and great for kids who enjoy some sensory fun throughout the day.

Winter Tie Dye

DIY T-Shirt projects for kids

Tie Dye is a time-tested fan favourite for a reason. Tie-dye is cheap and fun and creates phenomenal colours and patterns.

For a unique winter tie-dye masterpiece, you can either go with a frozen, snowy theme (think blues, greys, silver, gold), or you can go with darker, more muted colours (browns, blacks, dark greens), OR you can take things in a holiday direction with green, red, gold, and white.

Whatever you select, have fun with your patterns. Most tie-dye kits come with pattern suggestions (spirals, camo-themed, etc.), but you can make these projects your own.

One idea that we love is using some masking tape to create winter-themed shapes. From leaves, stars, and presents to holiday trees and snowmen, there’s no end to the possibilities within this fun craft.

One note when doing tie-dye: use gloves, because the dye is permanent and can be challenging to get off of fingers and out from under your nails.

DIY Snowglobe T-shirt

DIY T-Shirt projects for kids

One unique and creative kid-friendly DIY t-shirt idea is to create a wearable snow globe.

This project does involve glue (either fabric glue or a hot glue gun), so make sure to keep younger children away from hot tools or toxic glue.

All you need to create a wearable snowglobe is:

  • An old t-shirt or sweatshirt
  • Square of plastic that you will create a pouch out of.

For the plastic pouch we like repurposing clear pencil cases, waterproof phone pouches, or similar items.

Gluing one plastic edge to the shirt, let your kids fill the pouch with fun items like mini snowmen, trees, or whatever else they like. Add glitter at the end to create a “snow” effect, then seal everything up. Afterward, the pouch should have some air and space, and your kids can watch their glittery snow globe work its magic whenever they move.

For some more fun, let your kids paint or draw on the rest of the shirt to make this winter shirt their own.

When it comes to DIY t-shirt and sweatshirt crafting ideas, there’s no limit to the fun and creativity out there. Just remember, always keep a watchful eye on younger t-shirt makers and keep any dangerous or heat-centric tools high up and away from little artists.

Most importantly, have fun with these crafts and enjoy a new wardrobe filled with unique and personalised winter-friendly items.

Planning a sleepover for your child? Don’t be under any illusion that they’ll actually sleep, so get prepared with our essential round-up of 11 entertaining sleepover games for the best ever slumber party!

Sleepover Games Kids Will Love!

Sleepover fun is the kind of childhood memory your kids will treasure – but in the moment it can be a bit daunting for parents. How will I entertain them? Will they be bored? What will I do if (when!) they don’t sleep? Why did I think this was a good idea…?!

Take it from me – they probably won’t sleep, there’ll be lots of giggling, they’ll be hunting for snacks and treats all night, and you’ll regret agreeing to host the sleepover at least a dozen times through the night. BUT your kiddo will be thrilled and the kids will go home happy and tired.

The key to a great sleepover is to have a few things planned (movies, party games, activities, etc) as a back up. The kids may be happy to just hang out and entertain themselves, but having some activities up your sleeve just in case is a good idea. These sleepover games are great fun, suitable for a range of ages, and really don’t require any preparation.

#1. Sardines

sardines

Sardines is the reverse of hide and seek. One person hides while the other players count to 100, then everyone searches for the hidden person.

Whenever a person finds the hidden person, they quietly join them in their hiding spot until everyone is squeezed into the hiding place.

Last player to find the hiding place becomes “It” for the next game.

#2. Hide and Seek in the Dark

Turn off all the lights. One person is “It” and counts to 100 while the rest of the players hide. The person who is “It” has to find them without turning on any lights, and the last person found becomes “It” for the next game.

#3. Twister

We all remember the classic Twister game, played on a large plastic mat with rows of red, yellow, blue and green circles.

A spinner attached to a square board determines where each player has to put their hand or foot – but due to the scarcity of coloured circles, players will often be required to put themselves in unlikely or precarious (and hilarious!) positions, eventually causing someone to fall. A person is eliminated when they fall or when their elbow or knee touches the mat.

There is no limit to how many can play at once, but more than four is a tight fit.

#4. Who Am I?

Prepare Post It notes with names of famous people on them. E.g. pop stars, celebrities, movie stars, famous people from history.

Everyone gets a Post It note on their forehead (without seeing who they are) and each person has to figure out which famous person they are asking only questions that have a Yes or No answer. Continue until everyone has guessed who they are.

#5. MASH

MASH

MASH stands for “Mansion, Apartment, Shack and House” and is a predict your future game. What house are you going to have, who are you going to marry, what type of car will you drive and so on.

If you’re not sure how to play, here are the rules of MASH and A Girl and a Glue Gun has free downloadable MASH sheets.

#6. Toss and Talk Ball

Take a beach ball and use a permanent marker to write a list of questions/talking points onto the ball.

For example,

  • If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
  • Describe yourself in 3 words
  • Chocolate or vanilla?
  • Spiders or snakes?

The ball is then passed around and when the person catches it they must answer or act out what is written below their right thumb.

#7. Treasure Hunt in the Dark

Pass out glow sticks, and then each person takes it in turn to go outside and hide 5 glow sticks that the rest of the players have to find.

You can buy packs of Glow Sticks in different colours on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com – NB if you buy through our links we get a small commission.

#8. Set Up a Photo Booth

Go selfie mad with a photo booth and lots of fun accessories.

#9. Glow in the Dark Bubbles

Make some glow in the dark bubbles and head out door for bubble fun. You’ll need:

  • some glow in the dark or fluorescent paint (available from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com)
  • dish soap
  • water
  • bowls for mixing
Mix a tiny bit of the glow paint into water then add your dish soap and combine to make your glow in the dark bubble mixture.

#10. Crepe Paper Maze

paper maze

For a quick and cheap idea to entertain the kids, what about a Mission Impossible-style spy mission?

Create a paper maze along your hallway using a roll of crepe paper and fasten it with tape criss-crossing across the hallway or room.

The aim is for the kids to go through the maze one at a time and get to the other end without breaking the paper.

Don’t forget, you want it to be difficult enough, but still doable so that it is fun.

#11. Play a Game of Spoons or Pontoon

How about a game of Spoons? This fast-paced, fast-moving card game is good for 4-10 players. You just need a couple of decks of cards and some spoons. Read the Rules for Spoons.

Another great game is 21 (also known as Pontoon or Blackjack) which works well for 5-8 players:

  • The aim for each player is to get their hand as close as possible to 21, but not going over 21. The best hand is a Pontoon, which is 21 points in two cards – this can only consist of an ace plus a picture card or ten. Hands with more than 21 points are bust and are worthless.
  • The dealer deals two cards to each player. The players examine their cards and decide if they are going to Stick or Twist. ‘Stick’ means no more cards; ‘Twist’ means getting another card. The dealer addresses the players in turn, who either Stick or Twist. If they are bust they declare ‘I’m Bust’ and put their cards down.
  • When all players have been accommodated, the dealer’s hand is turned over. The dealer is free to add cards face up to it, stopping when satisfied or is bust. If the dealer and a player have equal valued hands, then the dealer wins.

Got a tween birthday party coming up and in need of some ideas? When you go past the Pin the Tail on the Donkey and Pass the Parcel stage you need games that will keep the 8-12 year olds engaged and interested. So here are 20 highly entertaining party games for tweens that are tried-and-tested for party success!

While kids this age are more likely to entertain themselves, or have precise ideas on how they want their party to go, having some ideas to hand is really useful.

Most of these party games for tweens require little preparation or special props, but provide plenty of fun!

Fun Party Games for Tweens

#1. Grape in Flour

You will need a plate, flour, a knife and some grapes. Put one grape balanced on top of a mountain of flour. Each child has to take a turn to slice away chunks of flour without knocking the grape.

The loser who knocks the grape ends up with their face pushed into flour!

#2. Donuts on a String

party games for tweens

Using donuts with a hole in the middle, tie the donuts onto some string and hang in a row. Each child has to have a go at eating a donut without touching or licking the sugar off their lips.

#3. Truth or Dare

Prep some truth or dare questions (it helps to control things a little so the questions don’t get out of hand!) on slips of paper and put them in a jar. Each person takes a turn to pick one and has to tell the truth or do a dare.

Here are 100 truth or dare questions from Momof6.com that will help you get a head start on one of the most classic party games for tweens!

#4. Would You Rather…

This game can get quite fun, especially if you start it off with some gruesome questions. In my experience this age group loves anything to do with farts, burps, bums and slurps! Here are some ideas to get you going:

  • Would you rather… eat a slug or lick a snail?
  • Would you rather… live in a damp cave or a windy treetop?
  • Would you rather… kiss a frog or eat a toad?

If you have a birthday near Halloween, try our Halloween Would You Rather.

#5. Stack Attack

You will need 28 plastic party cups. Each person has 60 seconds to stack the plastic cups in a pyramid shape and then unstack them all back again.

#6. Pile Up the Dice

You will need flat craft sticks or popsicle sticks and 6 die. Each person holds a stick in their mouth and then has to pile up the dice on top of each other without dropping them all.

#7. Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt is a fun activity any time of the year, and we’ve got lots and lots of ideas on Mykidstime for kids scavenger hunts.

Prepare a list of 10 or more items that each team has to head outside (or it can be done indoors if really horrible weather) to find. First team back with all their items wins.

#8. Pool Noodle Hopscotch

party games for tweens

This is a fun idea from Parents.com – you’ll need 8 pool noodles and some duct tape. Make each noodle into a circle and tape it to its neighbour and then have 2 as the top and bottom supports in a 2×3 pattern. Everyone has to hop through each circle without touching a noodle. You could also do a bean bag toss or set it up vertically to throw balls through as well.

#9. Suck It Up

You will need a straw per player and some M&Ms or Smarties. Place 25 sweets onto a paper plate and the players have to suck up and transfer each M&M or Smartie to another plate in under 60 seconds. You can only use one hand to hold the straw.

You could have multiple players competing in each round. And of course everyone gets to eat their sweets at the end!

#10. Keepy Uppy Balloons

Each player gets two balloons. During one minute, they have to keep both balloons from touching the ground. Rules: they can only use one hand and they can’t hold onto the balloons!

You could have 2 players per round with one knocked out each time until there’s a winner.

#11. Twister

Twister is played on a large plastic mat that is spread on the floor or ground, the mat has four rows of coloured circles, red, yellow, blue and green.

A spinner is attached to a square board and is used to determine where the player has to put their hand or foot. After spinning, the combination is called (for example: “right hand yellow”) and players must move their matching hand or foot to a circle of the correct colour.

#12. Stand in a Bubble

inside bubble

How about making a big batch of this fun super bubble mix and then getting everyone to have a go at standing in a bubble?

You’ll need a round play pool, a hula hoop and a non-slip stool to stand on.

(Be warned you might want a change of clothes for this game as the bubble mix can get a bit messy!)

Alternatively, create a spooky batch of glow in the dark bubbles for an evening party as a treat!

#13. Cookie Face

You will need one cookie per player. Each player has to place a cookie on their forehead and using only their facial muscles get the cookie into their mouth in under one minute! Oh, and to make it even more interesting… no hands!

#14. Who Am I?

Prepare Post It notes with names of famous people on them. E.g. pop stars, celebrities, movie stars, famous people from history.

Everyone gets a Post It note on their forehead (without seeing what the note says) and each person has to figure out which famous person they are, asking only questions that have a Yes or No answer.

Continue until everyone has guessed who they are.

#15. Fortune Tellers

You’ll need paper, scissors, pens and each person gets to make their own fortune teller and then tell each other’s fortunes with it.

#16. Dress Up Relay

You’ll need two sets of clothes for two teams to dress up in, e.g. shirt, sweater, trousers, scarf, gloves, hat, shoes. One team member is chosen to be the “mannequin”.

When you say go, a team member races to the bag or basket of clothes, chooses one item of clothing and puts it onto the “mannequin” then runs back to the start. The first team to dress their “mannequin” wins.

If you want to make the game more challenging and fun, you could customise costumes with patches that match a theme or your child’s interests. You can choose a custom patch design online for your chosen theme e.g. anime characters, cartoon images etc.

To play, the children have to find and match their costume to a corresponding patch.

The custom embroidered patches for the event can also be given to the kids as souvenir gifts after the game.

#17. Chocolate Balls and Chopsticks

You’ll need a packet of Maltesers or chocolate balls, 2 plates and a pair of chopsticks.

Each person has to take it in turns to use the chopsticks to transfer as many chocolate balls as they can between the two plates in under 60 seconds. The person who transfers the most chocolates wins.

#18. Slurping Worms

You will need whipping cream (we use skooshy cream) and worm-shaped sweets as well as paper plates.

Dollop the cream across the plate and then sprinkle some worm shaped sweets on the plate. People have to use their mouths only to grab the worms, getting covered in the cream in the process of course!

#19. Bingo

emoji bingo

Bingo is a fun game for tweens. You will need to prep the bingo cards in advance and we found this cool Emoji Bingo Game on Catch My Party that has free printable cards to play, that we think tweens would love.

#20. The Chocolate Bar Game

And finally, last but not least, the chocolate bar game.

You will need:

  • large bar of chocolate on a plate with a knife and fork
  • large boots, large jacket, hat, and gloves
  • one dice

Kids throw the dice until someone gets a 6. Whoever gets a 6 quickly puts on all the clothes and starts to eat the chocolate using the cutlery until the next child throws a 6 and then it becomes their turn. Really funny game the kids (and adults) will enjoy!

I hope you’ll agree that there is nothing better than relaxing outdoors in a cosy space with good company and good food. You have told us how much you are looking forward to entertaining and using your gardens and outdoor space this year to socialise with friends and family.

And, with a bit of planning, you can easily transform your garden, patio area or balcony into the perfect entertaining space to enjoy social gatherings, outdoor eating and more!

Not sure where to start? We have teamed up with Calor to bring you some clever and inspiring ideas for entertaining in your outdoor spaces this summer and beyond.

Entertainment Ideas for Outdoor Gatherings

Whether your outdoor space extends to lush lawns, a patio, deck or balcony it can be quickly and easily transformed to create the perfect outdoor area for inviting friends and family round to enjoy a day or evening of entertainment.

With these tips and ideas on entertaining outdoors, we hope to inspire you to make the most of your outdoor space this summer and beyond.

Get Your Grill On

tips and recipes for Cooking outdoors in association with Calor

Is there anything better than cooking outdoors on a warm summer afternoon or evening and enjoying relaxed time with family and friends? Get your BBQ fired up and enjoy some tasty treats from tangy citrus delights to potato boats and a delicious S’mores dip, the perfect way to round off your feast!

Be sure to grill safely with these top BBQ tips and some extra recipes.

Pizza Party

Calor Gas

For a break with tradition, a pizza party is not only great fun, but everyone can customise their toppings to get exactly what they want so there is no waste!

Best of all you can get perfect pizzas in 3 minutes with the portable Sahara tabletop pizza oven from Calor, or by adding a pizza stone to your BBQ, so you can even cook your creations outdoors too.

Prepare your dough in advance and set out a selection of pizza toppings for everyone to customise their own pizza, before baking to perfection and settling down to enjoy your Italian feast.

Cosy Evening Get Togethers

Evening get togethers are always enjoyable but often we don’t consider using our outdoor space for evening gatherings. You can easily extend your time outdoors by adding heat and light to your outdoor space.

Whether you are having drinks and nibbles or plan on serving a meal or takeaway, set the scene with solar powered, battery or plug in lights or lanterns to make your outdoor space look beautiful.

Be creative and think about where else you can include lights to showcase your plants, or create a canopy of lights by hanging them overhead.

To stay cosy, have throws and cushions available and check out the range of outdoor heaters from Calor. They really do have an option for all outdoor spaces with everything from tabletop and free standing patio heaters to flame towers, ensuring you and your guests stay cosy no matter what the weather.

And with their renewable 6kg and 11kg gas tanks, Calor have the perfect fit for your outdoors and are kinder to the planet too.

Cinema Nights Under the Stars

Once you have your heating and lighting set up, you can be creative with your evening entertainment.

We love hosting cinema nights in the garden with kids, grandparents and neighbours all invited round to watch a family movie under the stars. We have a small projector, which are easy to source from local electrical retailers or online, and we use the side of the house as our screen!

Add in cushions, bean bags or deck chairs, popcorn and treats and you are ready to go! It is a real treat on warm summer nights for kids and adults alike.

Outdoor Living

Make the most of your garden, patio or balcony, no matter what the season with the vast range of outdoor living products from Calor.

Calor Ideas for entertaining in your garden this winter

S’mores & Pot Luck Party

No good outdoor gathering would be complete without a round of s’mores! Fire up the BBQ or heater, hand out the skewers, biscuits, chocolates and marshmallows and you are ready to go. Or you could try this tasty s’mores dip.

For the pot luck element of your party, ask guests to bring along a ready prepared dish that everyone can tuck into before cooking your s’mores.

Themed Party

entertaining ideas for outdoors

Add a theme to your outdoor get together to get everyone in the party mood!

Ask guests to arrive in outfits/costumes associated with the theme and prepare food, music, decorations and games to tie in with the theme. You’ll find loads of themed party ideas in our party section to get you started.

If you would prefer to keep it simple, have a dance party, all you need is some music and enthusiastic guests!

Outdoor Games Everyone will Enjoy

If you have the space, a homemade obstacle course is a great way to keep kids, teens and adults entertained.

For fun outdoor games that require no equipment or set up, check out how to play everything from Land, Sea, Air to Choose Your Corner!

For smaller spaces, or to simply keep the kids entertained, you could organise a scavenger hunt.

Finally how about an outdoor family board games night? Just make sure you invite the neighbours so the inevitable family arguments don’t keep them awake!

We hope these entertaining ideas inspire you to make the most of your outdoor area and to safely enjoy time with family and friends outdoors at home.

Happy (nearly) New Year! When it comes to New Year’s Eve with kids I have numerous tricks up my sleeve to make it memorable and entertaining for the whole family, so get ready to start the countdown!

You can have a fun New Year’s Eve with kids before the clock strikes twelve.

Celebrating New Year’s Eve with Kids

When you become a parent it’s rare that you will see yourself glitzed up and ringing in New Year’s Eve at your local or, shock horror, at a glam party! In fact, I’m on eight years of PJs before 11pm – and, on a few occasions, I even conked out on the sofa before the midnight bells and missed all the celebrations. That’s parenting for you!

Staying at home to have New Year’s as a family doesn’t have to be PJs and cocoa though, and this year I plan on implementing a few new traditions with my kids. Check out these great ideas for making memories on New Year’s Eve with kids.

Tricky Trickster

Mykidstime new year's eve with kids

Firstly, turn back the clock for smaller kids. If you think your four-year-old is going to stay up till midnight, you’ve another thing coming – and it’s pretty much guaranteed to end in tears and tantrums (either yours or theirs).

Around 7pm, put the clock back a few hours and trick them into believing it’s midnight. Have a mini celebration and pop them into bed – they’ll be delighted that they saw ‘midnight’ and you won’t have to suffer the consequences.

Subscribe To Netflix

skylanders new years eve countdown

Are your children a fan of Trollhunters, Skylanders Academy or All Hail King Julien? Netflix has got your back this New Year’s Eve with a host of short videos with a countdown clock to midnight so kids can celebrate the new year in style.

The videos can be played at any time (not just at midnight) and parents can access the videos by searching “countdown”. It’s a genius idea, and it allows children to party earlier in the evening with their favourite characters.

Find the Clock

This game is perfect for smaller children and will most definitely keep them entertained for a while. Hide an alarm clock somewhere in the room, setting it to ring in five minutes. Challenge them to find it before it goes off.

Balloon Countdown

Image: How Does She

New Year’s Eve with kids is all about the fun and games, and this balloon countdown from How Does She is always a winner. Make a list of 12 fun games and activities for the kids to do and write each one on a small piece of paper. Now, blow up 12 balloons, putting one of the rolled up pieces of paper into each one. Once tied off, carefully use a marker to write an hour on them, starting at midday (e.g. 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, etc). Stick the balloons up around the room.

As each hour passes, let the kids pop one and then do the activity found inside. It could be as simple as making a jigsaw, playing Simon Says, a scavenger hunt in the back garden, or doing one of the other entertaining ideas mentioned in this post.

New Year’s Resolutions

Kids don’t think about new year’s resolutions, but it is a great time to start. Encourage them to think of something they could change or improve, or something they would like to work towards during the next 12 months.

It could be as simple working on their behaviour, changing a bad habit, reading more or starting a new hobby. Sit down with them and jot down a few ideas together.

Make Some Noise

noise makers

Image: Mom Junction

It’s time to get crafty and make some noise makers, like these ones from Mom Junction.

Grab the glue, some pebbles, tinfoil and recycle those toilet roll holders. You simply cover one end of the holder with tinfoil, pop the pebbles into the other side and cover it with tinfoil. You can use decorative or washi tape to hold the tinfoil in place, but plain sellotape will work just as well. Then let them get their shake on.

From super scavenger hunts and exciting science experiments to creative arts and crafts and active obstacle courses, here are 50 rainy day activities that are easy to do, budget-friendly, and LOTS of fun!

50 Fun Rainy Day Ideas for Kids Checklist - Mykidstime

Musical Midnight

A New Year’s Eve version of musical chairs that is perfect for both adults and kids. However, unlike the traditional version, kids will circle the chairs to the sound of ringing clock bells. When the clock bells stop ringing, everyone must grab a seat.

Make Your Own Party Hats or Crowns

Mykidstime new year's eve with kids

Grab some recycled card, glitter glue pens, lots of sparkly glitter, sequins and anything you can think of to make a fun New Year’s Eve party hat for the big countdown! You could even use some tinsel from the Christmas decorations.

Cup Tower Challenge

If you are ever at a party and they are using plastic cups, tell them not to throw them away – there are so many uses for them and they make some fabulous games too. Kids will love making a tower as tall as possible without it falling – can they make it as tall as they are?

For older children, you could introduce a timer for an extra challenge. Afterwards, use a ping pong ball to see who can knock down the most in one throw!

New Year’s Charades

Have the kids divide into two teams to play a game of New Year’s charades. To make it easier you can fill a hat with some age-appropriate suggestions. Encourage other team players to help smaller children too and prompt them.

Get Creative in the Kitchen

New Year's Eve party food

Clockwise from top left: Happiness is Homemade; Blog Lovin; Style Me Pretty; Eats Amazing

You can’t have a party without some great party food! New Year’s Eve with kids won’t be complete without some fun munchies and, of course, it needs to be themed.

We love these glitter fortune cookies from Happiness is Homemade, countdown cookies from Bloglovin, celebratory milk and cookies from Style Me Pretty, and easy fruit rockets from Eats Amazing.

Balloon Wish

To make a balloon wish, you will need biodegradable balloons and some helium. Get each of your kids to think of a wish in the garden and let them release the balloons high into the sky. Wait until you see their faces, it’s a gorgeous little activity to do on New Year’s Eve with kids.

And Finally Some Fizz…

New Year's Fizz for Kids

Image: A Mom’s Take

Make the kids a special drink to sip through the celebrations. You could just add some diluted squash or cordial to sparkling water, but this New Year’s sparkling cider from A Mom’s Take is really cool too. They are non-alcoholic and kid-friendly (although you may need the patience of a saint!).

And there you have it – easy peasy ways to party your way through New Year’s Eve with kids, and keep them entertained. If you manage to get them to bed before midnight, treat yourself to some bubbles and celebrate all your success throughout the year. Parenting isn’t always easy, but it’s so rewarding. This year may be coming to an end, but there’s still plenty of fun times ahead with your kids!

Pin the Nose on the Snowman

Christmas party games - pin the nose on the snowman

Image: Living Well Mom

In the style of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, create a snowman version like this one from Living Well Mom.

Use white paper to make the outline of a snowman. Provide eyes, a mouth, and a black top hat for your snowman. Cut orange-coloured “carrot” noses – one for each person playing – and add a glue dot, double-sided tape or blu-tack to the back. Blindfold each player in turn and let them attempt to attach their carrot nose to the face of the snowman. Whoever is closest wins!

Christmas Treasure Hunt

Hide candy canes or other Christmas themed sweets and let the kids look for them. Prior to the hunt, let the kids decorate paper bags with felt tips and Christmas stickers. They can use these bags to take their party treats home.

Make it harder with a certain colour theme for each person – that way, they may find a red sweet but have to leave it behind because their assigned colour is blue!

Christmas Charades

One of our favourite Christmas party games for kids is to take all the fun of regular charades and give it a Christmas spin! Write lots of Christmas activities and characters on small pieces of paper, fold them up and put into a large bowl. Divide your players into two (or more) teams and then each team takes turns having someone come up to act out their card.

Christmas activities could include decorating the tree, wrapping or unwrapping presents, looking for Santa, building toys at the North Pole, carving the turkey, pulling a Christmas cracker, carol singing, etc. Characters could include Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa, Frosty the Snowman, an Elf on the Shelf, the Grinch, etc.

What’s in the Stocking?

christmas-stockings

This is a really fun guessing game!

Fill a traditional Christmas stocking (or a pillowcase) with small toys and Christmas items, for example, a candy cane, a bauble, bell, small car, soft toy or pinecone.

Let the kids feel the stocking and try to identify the contents. The player with the most correct guesses is the winner.

Santa Says

A variation on the classic Simon Says game. Whoever is leading the game could be dressed up as Santa for a really themed game! Then give directions like:

  • Santa says, touch your knees
  • Santa says, hop on one leg
  • Santa says, run on the spot

Then give a command without saying, “Santa says…” like just “Spin around on the spot”. If one player follows the command, they are out and the next to be Santa. Continue until all the kids have had a turn.

Stack the Gifts

All you need for this fun game is several empty wrapped packages of various sizes – shoe boxes, cereal boxes, etc. Try stacking them yourself to make sure the challenge is difficult but possible. You can play this game in teams or pairs if you wish. The goal is to see how many gifts the players can stack before the pile topples. The highest pile with the most gifts wins this game.

Candy Cane Hook ‘Em

Image: Happiness is Homemade

Kids will love this candy cane hook ’em game from Happiness is Homemade, and all you need is a pile of candy canes!

Make a candy cane mountain on the table and give each player one each. With the long end of the candy cane in their mouth and their hands out of action behind their backs, each player has to use the hook of their candy cane to pick up as many others as they can and carry to their ‘safe zone’. The player with the most candy canes at the end of a set time (depending on the age of the children) is the winner!

Advent Calendar Treasure Hunt

Count down to Christmas with this exciting Advent treasure hunt. You can write messages on 24 cards hinting to treats scattered throughout your house. Play in one go or stretch out the fun in the lead up to the big day!

Ornament Pop!

Christmas party games for kids

Image: Carnival Savers

This Ornament Pop game from Carnival Savers is a great Christmas party game for older kids or adults.

Use a large piece of cardboard or craft paper and paint a Christmas tree. Use small inflated balloons and tape them to the tree as ‘decorations’ on your tree.

Each player gets three balloon darts and has to try and pop the balloons! You could award the winner based on the number of balloons popped – or, alternatively, you could hide a winning ticket in one of the balloons and whoever pops that balloon is the winner.

Christmas Balloon Tennis Race

Even the youngest kids will love this game, although it is challenging enough for pre-teens. Blow up red and green balloons to use as the ball. Attach the end of a lolly stick or skewer to Christmas themed paper plates to create a handle, and these become your bats or racquets.

Each player has to hit an inflated balloon with their plate, attempting to cross a designated finish line. You can use masking tape on the floor for the finish line. This makes an excellent team game for a larger group, or part of a Christmas-themed relay race.

Snowman Drawing Game

Snowman christmas party game

This snowman drawing game from Housing a Forest looks so fun and would be perfect for a crowd of mixed ages!

Give each person a paper plate and a marker. They have to place the plate on their heads and attempt to draw a snowman without looking – it’s a lot harder than it seems!

Christmas Musical Chair Games

We have three versions of this timeless favourite that kids will love. Base your choice upon the age of the children, as well as the time you have for preparation.

  • Traditional Musical Chairs. Simply add Christmas music and play the traditional game with one less chair than the number of players. Each time the music stops, the player without a seat is out and another chair is removed until you have a winner.
  • Pass the Parcel. While Christmas music is playing, a wrapped gift is passed around the circle. When the music stops, whoever is left holding the package unwraps a layer until the last person reveals a prize.
  • Christmas Ornaments. Cut the outline of ornament shapes (stars, circles, diamonds, etc) from bright coloured paper and place them around the room on the floor (tape them in place if needed). Have the children walk around while the music is playing, then when the music stops, each must stand on an ornament cut out. Whoever cannot find one to stand on is out. Remove a shape each turn until you have one winner.

Snow Blowing

Christmas party games

Image: All For the Boys

This simple Christmas party game, a version of the one we found on All For the Boys, works for even the youngest children. All you need is a few cotton balls and a drinking straw for each player. Draw a finish line on a large piece of paper or tape one onto a tabletop. The goal is to move a cotton ball across the finish line first by blowing through the straw.

Older children will also enjoy a pair/team version, where you keep points for the winner of each round. The team with the most points wins.

Memory Game

A fun version of the kids’ favourite Memory game, use individually wrapped Christmas chocolates. Put stickers on the bottom and write matching number pairs with a sharpie or pen on the stickers. Kids turn over the items and try to remember their location so they can make matched pairs. The number of chocolates used is dependent on the age and maturity of the kids playing.

Chase the Present

Have each child bring toy (a new one or one they are happy to part with) wrapped up as a Christmas gift. After the children sit in a circle, put all the gifts into the centre. Randomly choose someone to start the game by picking out a present for themselves. They unwrap the gift, and the next child has the option of taking the gift already opened or choose one from the other wrapped presents, and so on.

The fun comes when there is one toy everyone wants – and one nobody wants. Everyone ends up a gift, although not necessarily one they want!

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

Christmas party games for kids build a snowman

Image: Come Together Kids

We love this fun Christmas party game from Come Together Kids (which would also work well as a Frozen party game).

For this you will need some props like hats and scarves and plenty of toilet rolls. This is a great pair, team or relay game which involves setting a time limit to make one of your team into a human snowman!

One person is the ‘builder’ and one is the snowman. Wrap the chosen person in loo roll, leaving no part visible and then add all the necessary accessories. You will need a judge for the winner, so be prepared for some family rivalry! The winner could be based on the best snowman or the fastest, depending on the age of the kids.

Snow Shovelling Race

Shovelling “snow” indoors may beat being out in the cold, but it’s surprisingly hard to control cotton balls with a spoon. Race a friend to see who can shovel the cotton balls out of the bowl the fastest – one at a time!

You can make this harder for older children and adults by using chopsticks, making them use their non-dominant hand, or even blindfolded and guided by their teammates.

Snowball Relay Race

If you have more than two players, you can develop the snow shovelling race above into a whole family affair.

The goal in this fun relay race is to move snowballs (cotton balls) from one side of the room to another with a plastic spoon. Divide the players into two teams. The first person on each team uses a plastic spoon to transfer cotton balls from a full bucket on one side of the room to an empty bucket on the other side. Then they must run back to their team’s line and hand the spoon to the next person on their team to keep going. If a cotton ball falls off the spoon and onto the floor, it must be left on the floor. At the end of the game, count the cotton balls in the buckets. The team with the most snowballs wins the race.

Christmas String Maze

Christmas Party Games for Kids String Maze

Have you ever tried a Christmas maze? It’s hilarious fun, although does need some space to play.

Using small balls of wool in several different colours (one colour for each player), attach one end of the first colour to a pencil and then string the wool around the room, going under, over, around, and through furniture like this version from How Does She. Cut the string and begin again with another pencil. Repeat this process until you have one string for each child.

When the children arrive, hand them a pencil, and instruct them to wind the string up while following it. Fun and chaos is guaranteed!

Bauble Tossing

Stick ten plastic cups in a bowling pin triangle on a heavy piece of cardboard. Provide small plastic tree baubles (or other small items like candy) for kids to toss into the cups. Whoever gets the most baubles in the cup wins.

Make this harder for older children by letting them play in teams or pairs. Assign a different point allocation for each cup and then see who scores the most points at the end.
