No pressure, but your child’s birthday is their favourite day of the entire year. It’s an opportunity to make them feel extra special and create memories that will last a lifetime.

While social distancing is important, it doesn’t mean that the kids can’t have fun – as long as you do some careful planning, they’ll be thrilled with everything!

If your child is insisting that they want all their pals to be involved and invited to their party, then it’s best to go the virtual route. However, if they are okay with only having a few friends round, it’s time to get planning a great party!

Don’t forget that you need to take into account what the other parents will feel comfortable with too, so it might be wise to create a Whatsapp group or similar to put forward some suggestions and see what gets the most votes.

How to Throw a Virtual Party

Zoom, Skype or similar virtual options are a great way to have a big group of mates to mark the occasion, and there’s no reason why you won’t get maximum attendance if you schedule it well in advance. You could even record the call for posterity – it’ll certainly be a conversation point and unique party to look back on in years to come.

Ask the birthday boy or girl to decide on a theme and then ask everyone to dress up for the call. It could be their favourite movie, TV show or book, or you could make it easier and pick a colour for everyone to wear.

No party, even a virtual one, is complete without invitations. Set your child the task of designing an invite to communicate the theme – they just need to create one, and it could be a drawing, comic, painting, secret coded message, or whatever they can come up with! You can then email or Whatsapp their creation to all the party guests and include the date, time, meeting ID and password to log on.

The party may be virtual, but the treats can still be real! There’s no reason why you can’t give each child a party bag; it may just work better to give it to them before the event rather than at the end.

Do a birthday drive-by and drop off (at a distance, of course) some goodies for each of your child’s virtual guests to enjoy during the call. Apart from some edible treats, you could also include some age-appropriate activities. Colouring supplies, a mini tub of playdough, charades cards, quiz questions, a bingo sheet, treasure hunt sheet, etc. Turn them into something fun to do on the call – for example, play a game of virtual charades, or have a race to build something with LEGO or playdough…there are lots of great options.

Above all else, ensure that you allow time for a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ before your free 40 minutes (on Zoom) is up.

What About a Social Distancing Party in the Garden?

A garden party is a great option in the current climate because we know that it’s safer to stay outdoors. If you’re worried about the weather, consider hiring a gazebo so that at least you’ll be reassured that rain won’t halt play.

Social distancing is key so why not think up a fun way to keep the party guests separate. If they’re playing on concrete the children could chalk their own circle two meters apart, and if they’re on grass you could give them each a hula hoop that they can’t step outside of. You could then play musical statues, ‘Simon Says’ or charades and award prizes for the winner of each game, as well as a special bonus prize for anyone that didn’t budge outside of their ‘bubble’.

If your child is a film fanatic, why not set up their very own outdoor cinema? Purchase or hire a projector and create a screen by pegging a white sheet to your washing line or fence. Ask the kids to bring their own cushions so everyone stays cosy and then place them two metres apart on picnic blankets or groundsheets. Make up goodie bags for each of the children – don’t forget the popcorn (their own sealed bags would work best) and a drink.

What Else to Consider With a Social Distancing Party

Collection and Drop Off

Consider staggering the drop off and collection times slightly. This will prevent adults from congregating in your hallway, and if you’ve got a side gate then instructing them to enter through there rather than the front door will help further.

Party Times

As well as being strict about only inviting a small group of children (particularly with younger kids), it’s also a good idea to keep the party short and sweet.

If you (or the other children’s parents) feel that offering food is more challenging, consider a party time like mid-morning or mid-afternoon so that you can skip providing a meal.

Party Games and Activities

In addition to the backyard movie and games, there are lots more socially distant activities than can keep everyone entertained:

• Races
• Obstacle courses and Sports Day games
• Bingo
• Disco
• Traditional party games (musical statues, Simon Says, charades, hide and seek, etc)
• Art station where each child gets to bring their paints/colours home
• Cupcake decorating with an individual bowl of sprinkles and sweets

Party Food

If you are serving party food, skip the bowls of crisps or shareable food and avoid a free-for-all where the children serve themselves. Instead, take orders beforehand so you can serve individual plates of food, or do up plates with a variety of options.

Some parents may prefer their children to bring their own treats with them, so check beforehand what the consensus is.

Using the Bathroom

Of course, children will most likely need to go to the bathroom during the party, so make sure you’re stocked up with antibacterial soap and paper towels for hand drying.

Birthday Cake

Birthdays and cake go hand in hand, right? But blowing out candles and then serving the cake to your guests is best avoided.

Your options here are to keep the cake for family only and provide cupcakes for your guests, or pop a candle in a cupcake for your child to blow out and then slice up the cake to share.

What About Presents?

Parties and presents typically go hand-in-hand, and there is little that can stop a birthday child from opening their gifts!

If you’re concerned, you could keep the presents until the end of the party when the guests have left and give them a quick wipe down before your child opens them. And a hand wash afterwards is a good idea.

Older children love to get a gift card so they can choose their own present. If you are asked for gift ideas, this is a good suggestion for any age.

Making Memories

Although it may seem like there is a lot to think about and organise, your plans will help to ensure your child and their friends have a wonderful time!

You could go for a 3D option like this Scooby Doo cake on Cake Central. Start by making a tray bake or sheet cake for the base, then bake a separate loaf cake that you cut to shape into the Mystery Machine van. Now get creative with your decorating and use play figures on top.

Top of the list has to be Scooby Snacks! Use a dog bone shaped cookie cutter, and either make little bone-shaped cookies like these ones from Hungry Forever.

Generally any kind of dog-themed food is going to work, as after all Scooby Doo is a cool hound. So continue the theme by cutting sandwiches, melon, ham, cheese, etc into bone shapes.

Hot dogs would also be fun and fit with the American show theme. You could have a Hot Dog Stand with a variety of toppings and sauces for party guests to choose from.

Or how about setting up a “Make Your Own Scooby Sandwich” or “Shaggy Subs Station” with different fillings they can put onto their sub or long roll. (This helps cater for all tastes too because they can choose their own).

Scooby Doo Party Games

To go with the Mystery theme, you’ll want a Scooby Scavenger Hunt with clues. Create a hunt around the house and garden with clues and riddles. You could have quotes on each clue card from the show as well.

Or have some detective activities for the guests to do, such as writing with invisible ink or playing nature detectives. You’ll find more ideas to inspire you over here.

The game of “Guess Who” would also be fun with all the different Scooby Doo characters including Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby. Favourite monsters and creepy characters include Phantom, Black Knight, Ape Man, Ghost Clown and Creeper (was he the inspiration for Minecraft?!).

Super Bites

These is something so deliciously more-ish about bite-size party food! This is definitely my guilty pleasure – but they’re so tiny they don’t count, right?

Sometimes all it takes is the right packaging. Parcel up some crisps, popcorn or sweets in little homemade cones – they look fantastic and take minimal effort!

For added style, why not try comic book printed paper or pages?

If you need a holder for the cones, try using an upturned shoe box or cereal box. Cover it with paper (even wrapping paper would work well), then pierce a pattern of holes approximately 1-2 inches in diameter in the cardboard to hold the cones.

Send Out Your Fortnite Invitations

Before you can get the party started, the party invitations need to be sent out so that your guests will be able to travel to your far-off Island to enjoy the adventure!

It is easy to order bespoke themed invitations from companies like Etsy, Amazon or eBay, many of which are usually instant downloads that you then print yourself. You can have the details printed on many of the Fortnite invitations when ordering, or you can simply print and fill in the details yourself.

You can also buy invitations from your local card or gift shops in Fortnite colours, camouflage or ones that are easily personalised with your party details. Another lovely option is to get your birthday child involved – buy blank cards and then have your child use stickers or cut-out pictures to make their own personalised party invites.

Set the Scene with Fortnite Party Decorations

There are any number of retailers, online and otherwise, who can supply you with Fortnite party decorations – however, you don’t need to spend a fortune on decorations if you are willing to get a little creative!

Here’s where the Fortnite party planning gets really fun! Decorating is important because you want the theme to encompass every aspect of your party. Look how great this party table from Kara’s Party Ideas looks with lots of themed elements, many of which you could recreate at home. The crates in particular would make a great party prop, and you could use lollipop sticks to make your own. Similarly, rolls of kitchen paper make great DIY medkits.

In general, yellow and blue are the perfect colours for decorating for a Fortnite party, but adding in green and black also work well as it brings in the Fortnite game terrain. Palettes, boxes or crates, netting, grass, llamas, and silhouettes would all fit in with the Fortnite theme.

Crates and treasure chests can be used to decorate and also hold food items, napkins and cutlery, games and toys, or even just as a table prop. We found this great tutorial for building your own treasure chest out of cardboard on Create in the Chaos. Paint and decorate it in keeping with the theme – and you can even reuse it afterwards for keeping toys in!

Use an army-style stencil font for any writing that needs to be done, and your printer can be your best friend! Adding homemade signs and labels can make the difference between run of the mill and an epic Battle Royale!

Floss Like a Boss With These Fortnite Party Games

To get your party underway a great list of games to entertain your gaming loving guests is always handy! How about trying a few of our favourites? Fingers crossed no Medkits required!

#1. Flossing Challenge

Who has the best moves? Recreate the famous Fortnite dance moves and see who comes out on top.

#2. Target Practice

Aim to reach the highest score with some ping-pong balls, plastic cups and a homemade target wall.

#3. Fortnite Treasure Hunt

Before the party, use cardboard to cut out about 100 V Bucks that can then be hidden. The players then search a large area to find the V Bucks. After all the coins have been found they can be turned in to ‘buy’ loot or prizes.

#4. Boogie Hide and Seek

This is a new twist on the classic game of Hide and Seek, but with some dance moves thrown in for style. When the seeker finds a player they call out their name and then they both must dance for 10 seconds.

#5. Capture the Flag

To play Capture the Flag, two teams hide their flag and try to defend it from being captured by the other team. It’s a classic game of strategy, tag and teamwork.

We love this garden set-up from Happy Mom Hacks – it’s the perfect setting for any obstacle game!

#6. Shrinking Island

This is a fun game that is a version of Musical Chairs with a Fortnite twist. Just add name cards of the Fortnite island sections and tape the names to chairs.

#7. Fortnite Training Course

Before the party, set up a big obstacle course that kids will run through or have relay-style races in teams. Teams compete to see who can finish the obstacle course first. Trampolines, swing sets and other garden furniture can all be used as challenges in the training. Add in Nerf guns, crawling nets and mud pits (if you’re brave) for added fun!

#8. Bandage Race

Teams of three race to bandage one of their teammates with 2 rolls of bandages (toilet paper rolls). The first team to use both toilet paper rolls wins!

#9. Nerf Gun War

Assign each player a section of the garden (name it after a location on the Fortnite island) and give them a nerf gun and ammo. In the centre of the area place building materials such as large, medium and small cardboard boxes. Get the players to build a fort, and then let them loose for a Nerf battle.

The great thing about Fortnite party food is that it doesn’t need to be too different from what you would usually serve at parties.

The best way to make the food interesting is by using lots of shapes and colour and thinking of creative ways to display it, including themed signs to let everyone know what’s what.

Think about the game terrain and colours – grass, camo, etc – and use that for topping cupcakes and cakes. You can buy a grass-effect piping nozzle for decorating cakes, or make buttercream in a few different camouflage colours and alternate them for camo cupcakes.

Or keep it even simpler with cupcake sticks as your decorations – print off some Fortnite pictures (eg, silhouette figures, llamas, V Bucks, medkits, etc), stick them on toothpicks and into your cupcakes.

Serve small cups or bottles filled with juice or water with some blue colouring added – simply labelling them Chug Jugs will make them instantly appealing!

Even simple homemade (or store-bought) sugar cookies can be transformed into V Bucks with a large blue icing V in the centre. Or turn them into medkits with some red and white icing. The possibilities are endless.

For that perfect take-home memento, we love this idea for creating everyone’s favourite DROP loot bags.

Stencil the word DROP on the front of some plain paper loot bags, and attach a yellow helium balloon, just like these from All Wrapped Up Events. Easy, fun and they definitely fit the theme.

This idea for V Bucks we spied on Kid Bam is also very clever and effective. Transform regular chocolate coins into V Bucks with a little DIY printing, then pop them into a plastic cello gift bag.

Sweets, crisps and the usual loot bag goodies are always popular, but if you’re looking for ideas to continue the Fortnite theme, what about:
