Planning a sleepover for your child? Don’t be under any illusion that they’ll actually sleep, so get prepared with our essential round-up of 11 entertaining sleepover games for the best ever slumber party!

Sleepover Games Kids Will Love!

Sleepover fun is the kind of childhood memory your kids will treasure – but in the moment it can be a bit daunting for parents. How will I entertain them? Will they be bored? What will I do if (when!) they don’t sleep? Why did I think this was a good idea…?!

Take it from me – they probably won’t sleep, there’ll be lots of giggling, they’ll be hunting for snacks and treats all night, and you’ll regret agreeing to host the sleepover at least a dozen times through the night. BUT your kiddo will be thrilled and the kids will go home happy and tired.

The key to a great sleepover is to have a few things planned (movies, party games, activities, etc) as a back up. The kids may be happy to just hang out and entertain themselves, but having some activities up your sleeve just in case is a good idea. These sleepover games are great fun, suitable for a range of ages, and really don’t require any preparation.

#1. Sardines

sardines

Sardines is the reverse of hide and seek. One person hides while the other players count to 100, then everyone searches for the hidden person.

Whenever a person finds the hidden person, they quietly join them in their hiding spot until everyone is squeezed into the hiding place.

Last player to find the hiding place becomes “It” for the next game.

#2. Hide and Seek in the Dark

Turn off all the lights. One person is “It” and counts to 100 while the rest of the players hide. The person who is “It” has to find them without turning on any lights, and the last person found becomes “It” for the next game.

#3. Twister

We all remember the classic Twister game, played on a large plastic mat with rows of red, yellow, blue and green circles.

A spinner attached to a square board determines where each player has to put their hand or foot – but due to the scarcity of coloured circles, players will often be required to put themselves in unlikely or precarious (and hilarious!) positions, eventually causing someone to fall. A person is eliminated when they fall or when their elbow or knee touches the mat.

There is no limit to how many can play at once, but more than four is a tight fit.

#4. Who Am I?

Prepare Post It notes with names of famous people on them. E.g. pop stars, celebrities, movie stars, famous people from history.

Everyone gets a Post It note on their forehead (without seeing who they are) and each person has to figure out which famous person they are asking only questions that have a Yes or No answer. Continue until everyone has guessed who they are.

#5. MASH

MASH

MASH stands for “Mansion, Apartment, Shack and House” and is a predict your future game. What house are you going to have, who are you going to marry, what type of car will you drive and so on.

If you’re not sure how to play, here are the rules of MASH and A Girl and a Glue Gun has free downloadable MASH sheets.

#6. Toss and Talk Ball

Take a beach ball and use a permanent marker to write a list of questions/talking points onto the ball.

For example,

  • If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
  • Describe yourself in 3 words
  • Chocolate or vanilla?
  • Spiders or snakes?

The ball is then passed around and when the person catches it they must answer or act out what is written below their right thumb.

Don’t Miss…

Are you struggling to think of gift ideas for kids or teens? Try one of these fun experience gifts – all kid-approved!

gift experiences for kids and teens

#7. Treasure Hunt in the Dark

Pass out glow sticks, and then each person takes it in turn to go outside and hide 5 glow sticks that the rest of the players have to find.

You can buy packs of Glow Sticks in different colours on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com – NB if you buy through our links we get a small commission.

#8. Set Up a Photo Booth

Go selfie mad with a photo booth and lots of fun accessories.

#9. Glow in the Dark Bubbles

Make some glow in the dark bubbles and head out door for bubble fun. You’ll need:

  • some glow in the dark or fluorescent paint (available from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com)
  • dish soap
  • water
  • bowls for mixing
Mix a tiny bit of the glow paint into water then add your dish soap and combine to make your glow in the dark bubble mixture.

#10. Crepe Paper Maze

paper maze

For a quick and cheap idea to entertain the kids, what about a Mission Impossible-style spy mission?

Create a paper maze along your hallway using a roll of crepe paper and fasten it with tape criss-crossing across the hallway or room.

The aim is for the kids to go through the maze one at a time and get to the other end without breaking the paper.

Don’t forget, you want it to be difficult enough, but still doable so that it is fun.

#11. Play a Game of Spoons or Pontoon

How about a game of Spoons? This fast-paced, fast-moving card game is good for 4-10 players. You just need a couple of decks of cards and some spoons. Read the Rules for Spoons.

Another great game is 21 (also known as Pontoon or Blackjack) which works well for 5-8 players:

  • The aim for each player is to get their hand as close as possible to 21, but not going over 21. The best hand is a Pontoon, which is 21 points in two cards – this can only consist of an ace plus a picture card or ten. Hands with more than 21 points are bust and are worthless.
  • The dealer deals two cards to each player. The players examine their cards and decide if they are going to Stick or Twist. ‘Stick’ means no more cards; ‘Twist’ means getting another card. The dealer addresses the players in turn, who either Stick or Twist. If they are bust they declare ‘I’m Bust’ and put their cards down.
  • When all players have been accommodated, the dealer’s hand is turned over. The dealer is free to add cards face up to it, stopping when satisfied or is bust. If the dealer and a player have equal valued hands, then the dealer wins.

Got a tween birthday party coming up and in need of some ideas? When you go past the Pin the Tail on the Donkey and Pass the Parcel stage you need games that will keep the 8-12 year olds engaged and interested. So here are 20 highly entertaining party games for tweens that are tried-and-tested for party success!

While kids this age are more likely to entertain themselves, or have precise ideas on how they want their party to go, having some ideas to hand is really useful.

Most of these party games for tweens require little preparation or special props, but provide plenty of fun!

Fun Party Games for Tweens

#1. Grape in Flour

You will need a plate, flour, a knife and some grapes. Put one grape balanced on top of a mountain of flour. Each child has to take a turn to slice away chunks of flour without knocking the grape.

The loser who knocks the grape ends up with their face pushed into flour!

#2. Donuts on a String

party games for tweens

Using donuts with a hole in the middle, tie the donuts onto some string and hang in a row. Each child has to have a go at eating a donut without touching or licking the sugar off their lips.

#3. Truth or Dare

Prep some truth or dare questions (it helps to control things a little so the questions don’t get out of hand!) on slips of paper and put them in a jar. Each person takes a turn to pick one and has to tell the truth or do a dare.

Here are 100 truth or dare questions from Momof6.com that will help you get a head start on one of the most classic party games for tweens!

You Have Mail!

Get our best content direct to your inbox! You’ll receive quick and easy recipes, fun ideas to entertain the kids, parenting tips, great competitions, as well as offers from brands we trust.

#4. Would You Rather…

This game can get quite fun, especially if you start it off with some gruesome questions. In my experience this age group loves anything to do with farts, burps, bums and slurps! Here are some ideas to get you going:

  • Would you rather… eat a slug or lick a snail?
  • Would you rather… live in a damp cave or a windy treetop?
  • Would you rather… kiss a frog or eat a toad?

If you have a birthday near Halloween, try our Halloween Would You Rather.

#5. Stack Attack

You will need 28 plastic party cups. Each person has 60 seconds to stack the plastic cups in a pyramid shape and then unstack them all back again.

#6. Pile Up the Dice

You will need flat craft sticks or popsicle sticks and 6 die. Each person holds a stick in their mouth and then has to pile up the dice on top of each other without dropping them all.

#7. Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt is a fun activity any time of the year, and we’ve got lots and lots of ideas on Mykidstime for kids scavenger hunts.

Prepare a list of 10 or more items that each team has to head outside (or it can be done indoors if really horrible weather) to find. First team back with all their items wins.

#8. Pool Noodle Hopscotch

party games for tweens

This is a fun idea from Parents.com – you’ll need 8 pool noodles and some duct tape. Make each noodle into a circle and tape it to its neighbour and then have 2 as the top and bottom supports in a 2×3 pattern. Everyone has to hop through each circle without touching a noodle. You could also do a bean bag toss or set it up vertically to throw balls through as well.

#9. Suck It Up

You will need a straw per player and some M&Ms or Smarties. Place 25 sweets onto a paper plate and the players have to suck up and transfer each M&M or Smartie to another plate in under 60 seconds. You can only use one hand to hold the straw.

You could have multiple players competing in each round. And of course everyone gets to eat their sweets at the end!

#10. Keepy Uppy Balloons

Each player gets two balloons. During one minute, they have to keep both balloons from touching the ground. Rules: they can only use one hand and they can’t hold onto the balloons!

You could have 2 players per round with one knocked out each time until there’s a winner.

#11. Twister

Twister is played on a large plastic mat that is spread on the floor or ground, the mat has four rows of coloured circles, red, yellow, blue and green.

A spinner is attached to a square board and is used to determine where the player has to put their hand or foot. After spinning, the combination is called (for example: “right hand yellow”) and players must move their matching hand or foot to a circle of the correct colour.

#12. Stand in a Bubble

inside bubble

How about making a big batch of this fun super bubble mix and then getting everyone to have a go at standing in a bubble?

You’ll need a round play pool, a hula hoop and a non-slip stool to stand on.

(Be warned you might want a change of clothes for this game as the bubble mix can get a bit messy!)

Alternatively, create a spooky batch of glow in the dark bubbles for an evening party as a treat!

#13. Cookie Face

You will need one cookie per player. Each player has to place a cookie on their forehead and using only their facial muscles get the cookie into their mouth in under one minute! Oh, and to make it even more interesting… no hands!

Don’t Miss…

Pick your favourite of these Happy Birthday colouring pages, and send or give it to whoever is celebrating!

#14. Who Am I?

Prepare Post It notes with names of famous people on them. E.g. pop stars, celebrities, movie stars, famous people from history.

Everyone gets a Post It note on their forehead (without seeing what the note says) and each person has to figure out which famous person they are, asking only questions that have a Yes or No answer.

Continue until everyone has guessed who they are.

#15. Fortune Tellers

You’ll need paper, scissors, pens and each person gets to make their own fortune teller and then tell each other’s fortunes with it.

#16. Dress Up Relay

You’ll need two sets of clothes for two teams to dress up in, e.g. shirt, sweater, trousers, scarf, gloves, hat, shoes. One team member is chosen to be the “mannequin”.

When you say go, a team member races to the bag or basket of clothes, chooses one item of clothing and puts it onto the “mannequin” then runs back to the start. The first team to dress their “mannequin” wins.

If you want to make the game more challenging and fun, you could customise costumes with patches that match a theme or your child’s interests. You can choose a custom patch design online for your chosen theme e.g. anime characters, cartoon images etc.

To play, the children have to find and match their costume to a corresponding patch.

The custom embroidered patches for the event can also be given to the kids as souvenir gifts after the game.

#17. Chocolate Balls and Chopsticks

You’ll need a packet of Maltesers or chocolate balls, 2 plates and a pair of chopsticks.

Each person has to take it in turns to use the chopsticks to transfer as many chocolate balls as they can between the two plates in under 60 seconds. The person who transfers the most chocolates wins.

#18. Slurping Worms

You will need whipping cream (we use skooshy cream) and worm-shaped sweets as well as paper plates.

Dollop the cream across the plate and then sprinkle some worm shaped sweets on the plate. People have to use their mouths only to grab the worms, getting covered in the cream in the process of course!

#19. Bingo

emoji bingo

Bingo is a fun game for tweens. You will need to prep the bingo cards in advance and we found this cool Emoji Bingo Game on Catch My Party that has free printable cards to play, that we think tweens would love.

#20. The Chocolate Bar Game

And finally, last but not least, the chocolate bar game.

You will need:

  • large bar of chocolate on a plate with a knife and fork
  • large boots, large jacket, hat, and gloves
  • one dice

Kids throw the dice until someone gets a 6. Whoever gets a 6 quickly puts on all the clothes and starts to eat the chocolate using the cutlery until the next child throws a 6 and then it becomes their turn. Really funny game the kids (and adults) will enjoy!

Are you planning a birthday party, and looking for some ideas to cater for kids with food allergies or intolerances? From homemade nuggets to allergy friendly pizza, here are 5 easy party food ideas for kids with food allergies, to ensure all the little guests feel included on the day.

Planning the Party

When planning a birthday party for your child it is always a good idea to include a note about allergies on the invitations.

Birthday Party KidsKnowing in advance if a child attending the party has allergies or intolerances, means you can plan the birthday party food accordingly and include items suitable for children with allergies.

Chicken Nuggets, Pizza, Fish Fingers, Burgers and Chips are usual party favourites. Cooking them yourself means you not only control what ingredients are included, but you get a more healthy alternative to shop-bought products.

As for the cake, Rocky Road is always a winner in our house.

Tips for Planning

  • family-shoppingDecide what you want to serve and run the shopping list by the parents of the child with allergies. Sometimes they can eat a particular brand of certain products, but not another, so it is good to ask for that information too.
  • On the day, ensure you don’t include items the child cannot eat e.g. burger buns with sesame seeds.
  • Double check ingredients before you purchase.
  • Try to have the child over to play on a date before the party so you will feel confident on the day.

1. Allergy Friendly Homemade Chicken Nuggets / Fish Fingers

chicken nuggetsThese are so simple to create and much tastier than shop bought alternatives.

Ingredients & Method:

  • Heat oven to 180C.
  • Allow 1 breast of chicken or 1 fillet of firm white fish per 2 children, chopped into bite size pieces.
  • 1 slice of bread per fillet / breast, made into breadcrumbs in the food processor(check brand with child’s parents). For Gluten Intolerance you can use a gluten free bread.
  • Chicken and Fish are naturally sticky so simply roll the pieces in the breadcrumbs and place on an over proof tray lined with parchment paper.
  • Pour a little oil over the top and bake until cooked, usually 25 to 30 minutes.

2. Allergy Friendly Chips

baked chipsAs an alternative to oven chips serve homemade baked potato chips or simply chop potatoes into wedges.

  • Place them in a bowl and add a little salt and sunflower oil to coat.
  • Cook on a lined baking tray for 35 to 40 minutes alongside the chicken or fish.

3. Allergy Friendly Pizza

Making PizzaI usually turn pizza-making in to a party activity. Prepare the dough in advance, and let the children personalise their own pizza with a variety of toppings.

4. Allergy Friendly Burgers

burgerTo create great homemade burgers simply buy the best minced beef you can afford.

  • Place in a bowl, add a little salt and use your hands to ‘squash’ it together, this helps the burgers to bind together without the need to add an egg.
  • Shape into patties.
  • Fry with a little oil on the pan and serve.

5. Allergy Friendly Birthday Cakes & Sweet Treats

My daughter shares her birthday with her best friend, who has allergies to eggs and nuts among other things. Every year we create a giant rocky road cake which gets the thumbs up from all the guests. She can only have certain chocolate and marshmallow brands, so do check brands with the parents before you get going.

Allergy Friendly Rocky Road

Birthday CakeBe warned this may be allergy friendly but it is not healthy! This recipe serves 12 to 15. It is very rich so you will only need a small portion for each person

Ingredients:

  • 100g butter
  • 8 x 200g bars of chocolate
  • 1 large bag of pink and white marshmallows
  • 1 large packet of digestive biscuits
  • 150 ml milk (approx) or add more butter if a child has a milk allergy.

Method:

  • Melt the chocolate along with the milk and butter over a low heat. I usually do this over a pot of gently boiling water.
  • Add the biscuits and marshmallows to a food processor and blitz until you have bite size chunks. Alternatively add to a sealed bag and crush biscuits and tear marshmallows into bite size chunks .
  • Add most of the melted chocolate to the biscuit mix and stir to combine well.
  • Place the mixture in a lined tin / dish and pour over the remaining chocolate. Decorate with marshmallows and place in the fridge to set.

For gluten intolerance, check out this recipe for a delicious flour free chocolate cake.

Kids With Food Allergies have some great Allergy-Free Cake Recipes including White Birthday Cake, Lemonade Cup-Cakes and Kathy P’s Wacky Cake! You could always adapt these to create cake pops as small sweet treats for the table.

Sweets

Party BiscuitsFor sweets, check what brands the child with allergies can have and include those in your shopping.

From my experience, most jelly sweets and some hard sweets are okay, but always check with the parents first.

As an alternative to cupcakes you could ice suitable biscuits and add jellies.
