Are you looking for the perfect gift for the family? These annual family pass options for attractions in Ireland are the ideal choice for anyone with children.

If you are getting ready to host a party, look no further for inspiration! We have 18 great kids party food ideas, all suggested by Mykidstime parents, that are guaranteed to be a hit at the party.

We find that a mix of savoury and sweet, healthy and less so makes a good combination. Lay a mix of plates and bowls on the party table so the kids can help themselves, and give any hot food a few minutes to cool down before serving.

Kids Party Food Ideas They’ll Love!

Rainbow Fruit Kebabs

Make some rainbow fruit kebabs or put lots of sliced fruit out on a big plate to share.

Safety tip: grapes can be a choking hazard for children, so make sure to cut grapes in half lengthways.

Sandwiches, Wraps and Bagels

Simple, bite-size sandwiches or wraps are sure to be popular. Ham, cheese, jam, chicken are simple filling ideas, not forgetting some bagel quarters with cream cheese.

Want more sandwich ideas? Check out our round-up of 65+ sandwich fillings suitable for all, including vegan.

Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

Take two bars of chocolate (both milk, or one milk and one white) and melt them in 30-second bursts in the microwave, stirring in between.

Let the kids dip their strawberries into the melted chocolate (or if you prefer less mess, dip each strawberry and allow chocolate to dry.

“These go down a treat and I like the fact that they are getting something healthy and treat-y at the same time.”

Party Hedgehogs

Make a hedgehog for the kids. Take half an orange and using cocktail sticks with cubes of cheese and fruit, push the sticks into the orange to make your hedgehog.

“The kids love it and it’s healthy!”

Let Them Dip

hummus dip for kids party food ideas

Kids love to dip so the simplest thing is hummus with carrot sticks.

Or give them a couple of different dips to try with breadsticks, pepper slices, even apple slices can be dipped.

Rice Krispy Treats

Here’s two great recipes for Rice Krispie buns and Rice Krispie Chewies which are quick and easy to make.

“Always a winner at any age.”

Popcorn

We have found that a big bowl of popcorn is constantly a hit at kids parties. We always make our own as we prefer it to microwave popcorn, and it’s really simple.

  1. Coat a pot with a thin layer of oil then add the popping corn and put the lid on.
  2. Put the pot over a medium heat on the cooker and when you start to hear the popping just give the pot a shake every few seconds to make sure the corn isn’t burning.
  3. Once you hear no more pops, it’s safe to take the lid off.  Empty the popped corn into a bowl and add a blob of butter to the warm pot and melt it and pour over the popped corn.

Ice Cream Floats

These are so simple to make. Just put a scoop of ice cream in a glass and pour in a fizzy drink on top. Great combinations include vanilla + coke or vanilla + American Cream Soda.

Smoothies and milkshakes are also another popular choice with kids, so why not try making strawberry and banana milkshakes.

Pancakes

easy pancake recipe

Whip up a set of mini pancakes and set out some sliced bananas or strawberries, Nutella, whipped cream, mini marshmallows, or sugar & lemon juice. Here’s how to make some fun pancake shapes for kids.

Philly Biccies

Another great kids party food option is Digestive biscuits with Philadelphia and strawberry on top.

Kids loved them when we had them at our recent home party.

Chocolate Fountain

“This was a total hit! All you have to do is make some fruit kebabs i.e. strawberries and grapes and then let them dip into the fountain. My daughter’s friends from school were asking before her birthday ‘was the chocolate fountain going to be there’ as they remembered it from last year!

Chicken Skewers or Nuggets

delicious homemade chicken goujons

Homemade chicken goujons or chicken skewers with dips to pour over the chicken or to dip into. You could try a honey-mustard dip, garlic mayo, satay sauce, sweet and sour, or sweet chilli for older kids.

Sausages and Sausage Rolls

Most kids love sausages, even the fussier kids, so a good option for party food are either cocktail-sized sausages or mini sausage rolls (you can buy the larger ones and slice them into 3 before serving).

Or why not make your own – here are some super easy recipes for Homemade Sausages and Sausage Rolls.

Homemade Pizzas

neapolitan pizza recipe

Why not make some homemade pizzas? Kids love choosing their own toppings for and it helps cater for different tastes and even accommodate the fussy eater. Alternatively here’s a recipe for Neapolitan pizza.

“Make small pizza bases, then put out toppings in bowls (cheese, tomato sauce, ham, sweet corn, etc) and let the kids make their own.”

“Try puff pastry pizzas – literally get the ready-rolled puff pastry, fold back a little bit on each corner; put tomato puree or tomato sauce over it; add mozzarella cheese and use your imagination!”

An alternative to making pizza dough would be to use wraps or English muffins as the base.

Mini Burgers

These are very easy to make in advance and have ready to grill, here’s Clodagh McKenna’s mini burger recipe.

“Mini burgers go down a treat and if you keep them small, they are less likely to leave them uneaten”

Decorate Your Own Cupcakes

decorating cupcakes for kids party food ideas

“For my daughter’s first birthday I didn’t have time to decorate the fairy cakes so I made icing in three different colours, put jelly tots, smarties, hundreds and thousands, etc out on a table in bowls and everyone decorated their own…adults and kids LOVED this!

Our lemon buns would be a tasty bake for this!

Jelly Boats

Take some oranges, cut them in half and scoop out the orange being careful not to tear the orange skin. Then make up some jelly and pour into the ‘boats’. Leave to set in the fridge before serving.

I used red jelly and green so they could choose (or fight) over what coloured boat they wanted!

Marshmallow ‘Top Hats’

Melt some chocolate, then dip the top of a marshmallow in and top it with a colourful Smartie. Repeat with your remaining marshmallows, allow to set and serve.

“So quick and easy to make, and the kids love them.

Planning a sleepover for your child? Don’t be under any illusion that they’ll actually sleep, so get prepared with our essential round-up of 11 entertaining sleepover games for the best ever slumber party!

Sleepover Games Kids Will Love!

Sleepover fun is the kind of childhood memory your kids will treasure – but in the moment it can be a bit daunting for parents. How will I entertain them? Will they be bored? What will I do if (when!) they don’t sleep? Why did I think this was a good idea…?!

Take it from me – they probably won’t sleep, there’ll be lots of giggling, they’ll be hunting for snacks and treats all night, and you’ll regret agreeing to host the sleepover at least a dozen times through the night. BUT your kiddo will be thrilled and the kids will go home happy and tired.

The key to a great sleepover is to have a few things planned (movies, party games, activities, etc) as a back up. The kids may be happy to just hang out and entertain themselves, but having some activities up your sleeve just in case is a good idea. These sleepover games are great fun, suitable for a range of ages, and really don’t require any preparation.

#1. Sardines

sardines

Sardines is the reverse of hide and seek. One person hides while the other players count to 100, then everyone searches for the hidden person.

Whenever a person finds the hidden person, they quietly join them in their hiding spot until everyone is squeezed into the hiding place.

Last player to find the hiding place becomes “It” for the next game.

#2. Hide and Seek in the Dark

Turn off all the lights. One person is “It” and counts to 100 while the rest of the players hide. The person who is “It” has to find them without turning on any lights, and the last person found becomes “It” for the next game.

#3. Twister

We all remember the classic Twister game, played on a large plastic mat with rows of red, yellow, blue and green circles.

A spinner attached to a square board determines where each player has to put their hand or foot – but due to the scarcity of coloured circles, players will often be required to put themselves in unlikely or precarious (and hilarious!) positions, eventually causing someone to fall. A person is eliminated when they fall or when their elbow or knee touches the mat.

There is no limit to how many can play at once, but more than four is a tight fit.

#4. Who Am I?

Prepare Post It notes with names of famous people on them. E.g. pop stars, celebrities, movie stars, famous people from history.

Everyone gets a Post It note on their forehead (without seeing who they are) and each person has to figure out which famous person they are asking only questions that have a Yes or No answer. Continue until everyone has guessed who they are.

#5. MASH

MASH

MASH stands for “Mansion, Apartment, Shack and House” and is a predict your future game. What house are you going to have, who are you going to marry, what type of car will you drive and so on.

If you’re not sure how to play, here are the rules of MASH and A Girl and a Glue Gun has free downloadable MASH sheets.

#6. Toss and Talk Ball

Take a beach ball and use a permanent marker to write a list of questions/talking points onto the ball.

For example,

  • If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
  • Describe yourself in 3 words
  • Chocolate or vanilla?
  • Spiders or snakes?

The ball is then passed around and when the person catches it they must answer or act out what is written below their right thumb.

Don’t Miss…

Are you struggling to think of gift ideas for kids or teens? Try one of these fun experience gifts – all kid-approved!

gift experiences for kids and teens

#7. Treasure Hunt in the Dark

Pass out glow sticks, and then each person takes it in turn to go outside and hide 5 glow sticks that the rest of the players have to find.

You can buy packs of Glow Sticks in different colours on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com – NB if you buy through our links we get a small commission.

#8. Set Up a Photo Booth

Go selfie mad with a photo booth and lots of fun accessories.

#9. Glow in the Dark Bubbles

Make some glow in the dark bubbles and head out door for bubble fun. You’ll need:

  • some glow in the dark or fluorescent paint (available from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com)
  • dish soap
  • water
  • bowls for mixing
Mix a tiny bit of the glow paint into water then add your dish soap and combine to make your glow in the dark bubble mixture.

#10. Crepe Paper Maze

paper maze

For a quick and cheap idea to entertain the kids, what about a Mission Impossible-style spy mission?

Create a paper maze along your hallway using a roll of crepe paper and fasten it with tape criss-crossing across the hallway or room.

The aim is for the kids to go through the maze one at a time and get to the other end without breaking the paper.

Don’t forget, you want it to be difficult enough, but still doable so that it is fun.

#11. Play a Game of Spoons or Pontoon

How about a game of Spoons? This fast-paced, fast-moving card game is good for 4-10 players. You just need a couple of decks of cards and some spoons. Read the Rules for Spoons.

Another great game is 21 (also known as Pontoon or Blackjack) which works well for 5-8 players:

  • The aim for each player is to get their hand as close as possible to 21, but not going over 21. The best hand is a Pontoon, which is 21 points in two cards – this can only consist of an ace plus a picture card or ten. Hands with more than 21 points are bust and are worthless.
  • The dealer deals two cards to each player. The players examine their cards and decide if they are going to Stick or Twist. ‘Stick’ means no more cards; ‘Twist’ means getting another card. The dealer addresses the players in turn, who either Stick or Twist. If they are bust they declare ‘I’m Bust’ and put their cards down.
  • When all players have been accommodated, the dealer’s hand is turned over. The dealer is free to add cards face up to it, stopping when satisfied or is bust. If the dealer and a player have equal valued hands, then the dealer wins.

When I arrived in Ireland, the first Christmas I was here, one of my new Irish friends said to me she was going to a Little Christmas party and invited me to join her. I had no idea what that was, but I was happy to go along and enjoy the celebrations with her.

Now that I’ve been in Ireland for a long time, I’ve started marking the occasion myself.

What is Little Christmas?

Little Christmas, also known as Nollaig na mBan, is celebrated every year on January 6th.

You might be more familiar with this date as being the Feast of the Epiphany, twelve days after Christmas Day.

It’s also the traditional end of the Christmas season, the day we take down the Christmas tree and pack away the Christmas decorations for another year.

womens little christmas

Women’s Little Christmas was the traditional celebration when the nation’s womenfolk, after all the festive cooking and housework, were given their annual day off. The men would do a bit around the house so their other halves could go out for a bite to eat, a few drinks and generally have a good time without worrying that everything would go to ruin in their brief absence from the home.

Typically women would visit each other’s homes for tea, cake and chat. Another custom was the lighting of candles on the evening of the 6th, lighting candles in every room to celebrate the event.

While the original date might have signified a proper night off for women, nowadays it has become more a celebration of sisterhood and friendship, and why not? After all, we rely on our sisters, mothers, friends and the women in our lives as our support circle. So it’s nice to celebrate that with them.

Some Ideas for How to Celebrate Little Christmas

Many restaurants and hotels offer Nollaig na mBan celebrations with food, entertainment, music, so check out hotels near you to see whether they are hosting a night out.

Arrange a get-together for lunch or dinner with your mum, sisters, cousins and other female relatives. Afternoon bubbles is always a treat, or go the traditional route and have tea and cake.

If you do plan to host a Little Christmas party you could also consider using it as an opportunity to raise funds for a charity that supports women such as NBCRI, The National Breast Cancer Research Institute, Women’s Aid or Rape Crisis Centre.

The Cork Simon’s Women’s Christmas Lunch takes place every year in aid of homeless women in Cork.

Hold a “Take Down the Decorations Party” – go to one person’s house to help take their decorations down (and have a drink and some nibbles while you are at it!).

Across the country, there are often events that take place to mark Nollaig na mBan, so look out for something taking place near you.

Finally, I’ll leave you with this fun tweet – I particularly love the woman on the table’s face as she really let her hair down!

Classic rainbow cake is iced/frosted with white buttercream and then sometimes coated with sugarpaste. I am not a sugarpaste type person. I mean I can use it, and sometimes bake cakes coated with it, but when you have a baby pulling out of your leg most days and a three-year-old who wants your attention, it’s nigh impossible to find the time to do it neatly!

Rainbow Cake Recipe

Firstly, I baked the sponge on Tuesday and did the first layer of basic icing on the same day. Essentially it’s a Victoria sponge recipe based on Delia Smith’s classic – the key is how you colour and bake the mixture. To keep it simple, I flavoured every single layer and the frosting vanilla. Trust me, if you’re under pressure for time you will need to keep it simple.

If I had four sandwich tins I would have been able to bake it in half the time it took me – however, I didn’t, I had two. This means that it is easier to split and colour the mixture each time. It’s also easier to ensure you organise your colours, because some lead onto another.

A classic rainbow cake would have seven layers for all the colours, this one has eight – the reason being that every time I baked a batch of sponge, I baked two. It would have been rude not to include the final layer!

This is cake technically serves 20, however you could get more servings out of it because it is a tall cake and each slice could be halved again. The ingredients cost me approximately €17 in total, which means it works out at less than €1 per slice, even if you’re being generous.

Remember: You need to repeat the victoria sponge process 4 times in order to come up with 8 sponge cakes.

You will need the following food colourings for the sponge: yellow, red, blue

Cake Ingredients (repeat x 4):

  • 110g Butter
  • 110g Caster Sugar
  • 110g Plain Flour
  • 2 Medium Free Range Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Equipment:

  • Mixing Bowl or Stand Mixer
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Weighing Scales
  • 2 Victoria Sandwich Tins (20cm)
  • Baking Parchment (non stick)
  • Scissors
  • Butter & Flour (to grease and dust the tins)
  • Cooling Rack

Method:

  1. Preheat your (fan) oven to 170 degrees celsius. Line the base of your sandwich tins with parchment paper and use the butter and flour to grease the sides, this is very important.
  2. Cut a piece of parchment paper and weigh the flour and baking powder onto it.
  3. Weigh out the butter and sugar together and cream (beat) until light and fluffy.
  4. Add 1 egg and beat until mixed. Add the second egg and beat until well mixed. If it begins to look curdled, add a spoonful of flour. Pour in the vanilla extract and mix.
  5. Pick up the baking parchment and pour the remaining flour into the mixing bowl. Beat until all the ingredients are well combined.
  6. Pour half the cake mixture into the first tin, plain no colouring.
  7. Using the yellow food colouring add 1 teaspoon and stir until your batter turns yellow. Pour the yellow batter into the other sandwich tin.
  8. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes. Note: you slightly need to over-bake these sponges as you need them to hold better when you put them together. It’s easier as this way you don’t need cake dowels.
  9. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 5 minutes in the tin before tipping upside down and removing the tins and then the baking parchment. Don’t forget to leave the oven on!
  10. Wash and dry your bowl and make another batch of cake mixture. Wash, dry, re-line and re-grease the tins.
  11. For batch two, add 2 teaspoons of red food colouring to all of the batter. Pour half into one of the cake tins. Then add a further 1 teaspoon of yellow food colouring to the remaining batter (this gives you orange) and pour into the second tin.
  12. Repeat steps 8-10 above.
  13. For batch three, add 2 teaspoons of blue food colouring to all of the batter. Pour half into one of the cake tins. Then add a further 1 teaspoon of red food colouring to the remaining batter (this gives you purple) and pour into the second tin.
  14. Repeat steps 8-10 above.
  15. For batch four, add 1 teaspoon each of yellow and blue food colouring to all of the batter (this gives you green). Pour half into one of the cake tins. Then add a further 1 teaspoon of red food colouring on top. You should get a grey colour – if it is quite pale, add another teaspoon each of red, blue and yellow to get it darker.
  16. Repeat steps 8-10 above.

That’s it, the baking part is done. Give yourself a massive pat on the back! Keep your baked cake sections apart from one another by cutting squares of baking parchment and placing between each layer on a plate. Do this before they dry out.

Decorating Your Jelly Bean Rainbow Cake

It’s finally time to assemble and decorate! Please note that this is a generous quantity. You may have some frosting left over, but you can just pop it into a freezer bag and freeze for another day.

Ingredients (you will make this 3 times):

  • 250g Unsalted Butter (or if a block is 254g use that)
  • 500g Icing Sugar
  • 10ml Milk (whole fat or semi-skimmed is okay)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Equipment:

  • 1 large bowl (or stand mixer with whisk attachment)
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 spatula or knife for spreading
  • 1 cake-board or cake-stand

Method:

  1. Whisk the butter until light and fluffy, then add the icing sugar a spoon at a time on a low setting until it is completely mixed in.
  2. Use the milk to soften the mixture, if it goes into a breadcrumb consistency.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and whisk for 3 mins.
  4. Spread a spoonful of buttercream on the cake-board or cake-stand before placing your first layer. This will hold the cake in place.
  5. Use the spatula to spread a thin layer of buttercream frosting between each layer of cake. Once you have the layers in place, spread the buttercream around the sides, leaving the top til last. There’s no need for it to be particularly neat as you’ll be hiding most lumps and bumps with the jelly beans.
  6. For the jellybeans, think of building a wall. Each line of jellybeans needs to be slightly offset from the next as this increases the structural integrity.
  7. As it’s buttercream and Victoria sponge, this cake will keep for up to 4 days in a cool dry place.
