Puppies are really very adorable and if you have taken the bold step of bringing a new puppy into your home but are not sure about where to start with socialising etc, then this article should help.

Elisha Fahy RVN DipCABT gives her advice for these first time puppy owner tips:

Advice for New Puppy Owners

From food to where they sleep to routines to socialising, all of this takes a bit of getting used to as a first time puppy owner. Here are some new puppy tips to help you navigate the new arrival.

The Importance of a Puppy Diet

new puppy diet

A huge amount of research has resulted in life-stage diets which are formulated specifically for the nutritional needs of pets at different stages and these are available in many vets and pet stores.

Puppy diets are important because they have extra supplements added such as glucosamine and chondroitin to aid joints and antioxidants which promote a healthy immune system and help to protect brain cells.

Do try to feed your puppy the very best quality food you can afford, it’s an investment in your puppy’s health and happiness.

When it comes to treats, choose natural treats like carrots or broccoli and high-quality treats with healthy ingredients.

Make a Puppy Room

Just like a new baby, for a new puppy, things like baby gates do come in handy. If you have rooms that you don’t want your new puppy in at least until they are housetrained, then make a “puppy-safe room” for them to wander around in.

As well as their crate, their bed and some water, add some toys for them to play with and chew on.

After all, it’s really not possible to supervise your new puppy 24 hours a day, so having one space to put them when you can’t be with them is sensible.

Socialising Your Puppy

Socialisation is a vital part in the upbringing of puppies and will prevent certain behavioural problems later in life. Pets that are poorly socialised and habituated live a life of fear.

At the start of their lives, all animals go through what is known as a ‘sensitive development period’. During this time, they encounter the world for the first time – and learn to accept what they find.

In puppies, this period starts at birth and lasts until about 14 weeks of age. Anything a puppy experiences during that time will become part of its natural order of things. After that age, unfamiliar objects and experiences can cause a fearful response (sometimes extremely fearful) and can ultimately lead to aggression.

It is important, therefore, that the owner introduces his or her puppy to as much of puppiesthe environment and lifestyle as possible, as soon as possible.

Learning to interact normally with adults, children, other dogs and pets is called socialisation.

The experience of household noises like appliances, cars, the countryside and city – becoming accustomed to a wide range habitats and environments – is called habituation.

Why Socialisation and Habituation for Your New Puppy is Important

More young adult dogs are euthanased because of behavioural problems than die from the diseases we vaccinate against. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these behavioural problems are brought about by poor socialisation.

For example, if a puppy has never met a postman, or a child, and encounters one of these for the first time later in life, it can become extremely fearful. A natural response of a fearful dog, if it has no other means of escape, is aggression.

Proper habituation helps prevent similar problems. Imagine trying to take a dog who has never encountered a car on a journey – the poor animal will be sick with fear, and may become aggressive.

And, if a puppy has not been accustomed to separation from its owners during the sensitive period, it may, in later life, bark, whine, lose toilet control or be destructive whenever it is left alone.

Get Your New Puppy into a Routine

new puppy routine

Again, just like kids, puppies benefit from a consistent routine, where they know and learn what expected behaviour is.

Create a routine for when you feed them, when it’s play time, training time and of course cuddle time.

House Training Your Puppy

Puppies only have full control of their bladder at around 12 weeks of age, so you should expect some accidents as you house train them.

Take your puppy outside first thing in the morning, also after eating, after play time, after they’ve had a snooze and before bedtime. Praise them each time.

Our dog trainer recommended having one pole in the garden where you encourage them to go to at least pee there.

If you have to leave your puppy at home alone, then put them in their crate while you’re away as this will encourage them to control their bladder but also avoid them chewing on things.

Don’t Miss…

Would like your child to be more independent? This list of essential life skills will stand them in good stead for years to come.

Correct Behaviour Early

Don’t forget that some “cute” puppy behaviour may be annoying or even dangerous later when they get older. For example, jumping up on people or getting used to being held.

Now is the time to correct this behaviour before they get entrenched in it.

Puppy Training

new puppy training

Either get a dog trainer to come to your home, or enrol your new puppy in training classes, because both you and they will benefit from them. They should learn how to be obedient and follow some basic commands such as “Sit”, “Down”, “Come” and “Wait”.

Teaching them to walk on a leash without straining is also useful.

If you opt for classes, your puppy will also get the chance to socialise with other puppies.

Grooming and Cleaning Your New Puppy

grooming a new puppy

Get your puppy used to showering and teeth brushing and grooming, you’ll be grateful later that you did. Depending on the breed, they may need to go for regular visits to the dog groomers, so take them when they are a puppy to get their nails trimmed for the first time to get used to the new location.

Also get them accustomed to you looking in their mouth and running your fingers over their gums to prepare them for tooth brushing.

Buy a dog brush and gently brush them to get them used to being groomed.

Wash them gently in the shower with some warm water – you’ll need them to stay still the first time they roll in fox poo, so getting them accustomed to being showered is sensible.

Hopefully these tips for first time puppy owners are useful for you, a bit of common sense and plenty of love goes a long way too. And do enjoy the new puppy stage while it lasts, just like your kids, they will grow up in the flash of an eye.

Adults and children alike look forward to the fireworks and excitement at this time of year, but we sometimes forget that a lot of animals find it distressing. With a bit of preparation, you can reduce this stress drastically, and these tips on how to look after dogs at Halloween will really help.

Many dogs suffer terrible anxiety as a result of loud noise and flashing lights. Some animals are so traumatised that they still don’t want to go out the next morning – and in some areas fireworks can go on for days at a time, leading to a nervous pooch who needs some reassurance.

Carings for Dogs at Halloween

Start by Calming Your Dog

You can begin making things easier for your furry-nosed friend a few weeks before the event. That’s when many animal lovers start with a Bach flower treatment or insert a plug into the mains socket which gives out pheromones. These can have the effect of alleviating the stress, so a plug should really be fitted two weeks before the firework evening, to allow its effect to unfold fully.

You can also give food supplements which will strengthen the animal’s nerves.

Get Them Used to Noises

You can help allay a bit of the panic over loud bangs using a noise CD. Play the firework CD very, very quietly at first. Reward your dog for calm behaviour and increase the volume bit by bit.

This way the creature gains confidence and takes it on board that nothing happens despite all the detonations.

Keep Your Dog Inside

As the turn of the year approaches, dog owners should make sure their free-roaming friend stays inside, instead of cruising around outside where it might run get startled and injure itself when the fireworks kick off.

Ideally, you should also bring doggie inside during the daytime. If a big one goes off really close by, the dog can also run off in shock, so they are safer in the house.

Skip the Costumes

Dogs at Halloween may seem like a recipe for cute Insta pics, but as cute as it may seem to pick up a costume for your pooch, many dogs don’t love the experience.

If you do decide to dress him up, keep an eye out for telling behaviour. If your dog is reluctant, quiet, or pawing to get the costume or accessories off, remove it straight away.

Make Things Easier for Fido

On the evening itself:

  • Create a safe refuge for your dog by drawing the curtains. Many animals are even afraid of the flashing lights! The animal will feel more secure in the semi-darkness.
  • You can put on some music or switch on the television so that the noises from outside can’t be heard so easily.
  • You can also help your pet through your own confident behaviour: look self-assured and relaxed and Fido will sense that everything’s okay, despite the loud bangs.
  • Don’t under any circumstances comfort a trembling animal by talking soothingly to it and stroking it sympathetically, that just reinforces the panic.
  • Allow your pet to sit by you.
  • Animals who suffer full-on panic attacks on Halloween can also be given tranquillisers. But beware: only use medication which your vet has given you for your pet. Animals can react to human tranquillisers in a highly agitated manner. So discuss the use of medication with your vet in good time so that your pet can also have a happy Halloween.

When making the decision to get a family pet, there are dog people and cat persons, some who like both, and others simply choose to get a hamster or a tank full of tropical fish.

If you’ve already made the decision a dog is best for you and your family, what are some of the best breeds to get for you and your kids? Here are the Top 10 Dog Breeds Your Kids Will Love as Much As You:

The Best Dogs for Children

Before we look at the top 10, it’s worth mentioning some canines that aren’t so great with children. For example, certain breeds of terriers (sometimes nicknamed little terrorists) may not get along with kids as well as others. They can be “bossy,” independent and may not have the patience to deal with curious toddlers or small children.

Not to say that all smaller dogs or terriers wouldn’t make a good companion animal for children, sometimes larger breeds are simply more durable than others when it comes to toddlers and active kids.

Size matters also. Remember to consider the size of your home and yard when choosing your dog. If you live in an apartment, you and your family might be better off with a smaller animal like pug. Those with a bigger backyard could better maintain the high-energy levels of a retriever.

Here’s the top ten list of bets family dog breeds, according to the American Kennel Club, that come in all shapes and sizes:

#1. Labrador Retriever

labrador

Labrador Retrievers are loyal and friendly, they have the energy to keep up with growing kids.

#2. Bulldog

bulldog

Bulldogs are calm and happy dogs who can often be amusing.

#3. Golden Retriever

Golden retrievers will be known to you from the Andrex puppy ads. This intelligent, devoted dog is gentle and friendly.

#4. Beagle

Beagles are a happy-go-lucky dog and a calm, affectionate companion.

#5. Pug

As well as being adorable, pugs are playful, friendly and mischievous.

#6. Irish Setter

Irish Setters are active, easily trained, outgoing and good natured.

#7. Brussels Griffon

brussels griffon

This lesser-known breed is curious, loyal and playful.

#8. Newfoundland

newfoundland

Patient with kids, this gentle giant is a great playmate.

#9. French Bulldog

french bulldog

French bulldogs are another playful and docile dog breed, ideal for having around kids.

#10. Collie

collie

Remember Lassie? Collies are loyal and devoted to the end.

Other Breeds

Poor training, dogs specifically bred for fighting and other attributes have lead to a bad name for some really great dogs. Even though terriers may not be the best choice for a family, don’t discount these breeds altogether purely by their reputation. The same is true for other canines that have higher statistics for biting and attacking people.

We won’t get into the Pit Bull debate here, but it’s interesting that the number two spot belongs to a Bulldog and the French Bulldog also makes the cut in the AKC top ten.

Proper Training

family with dog

When the Pit Bull splashed across headlines for a seemingly bad disposition, other canines were also improperly labeled as “bad dogs,” also partially due to media exposure. Take these three noble breeds who make great family pets:

  1. Doberman Pinschers
  2. German Shepherds
  3. Rottweilers

You may have seen or read that these dogs are vicious, snarling, animals meant to intimate intruders and sometimes attack without provocation. What some potential pet owners may not realize is these dogs are mostly strong-willed, but they’re also very intelligent, extremely loyal and make excellent pets when trained properly.

Proper training is absolutely essential regardless of what breed you choose to be your family pet. Be sure to do your research and understand what you’re getting yourself into before adopting an animal.

Just like your kids, they need discipline, continuous care and attention to grow into the best animal they can be for you and your family.

One of the many ways parents can teach their children about responsibility is through pet ownership. Giving kids the challenge of caring for another living creature is a tremendous learning experience. Along with their parent’s guidance, many pet choices offer affection in return for a child’s, love, care and attention.

But if you’re thinking of getting your child a pet, then What Are The Best Pets for Kids To Get First?

What Are The Best Pets for Kids to Get First?

Is your child begging for a pet? Do they have their eye on a kitten, puppy, goldfish or a hamster? It can be tricky to make that all important choice of which animal to get. It depends on many different factors and your family circumstances:

  • the child’s age
  • what animals they might be fond of
  • how much time they’ll be able to spend with their new best friend, etc.

Whichever pet you decide on, it’s a good idea to research in advance, so you know what you are letting yourself in for. If possible, I would recommend borrowing a similar pet for a few days to let your child have a go at caring for it before you commit yourself.

Other than the many different breeds of dogs and cats available, here are some other choices for a child’s first pet:

An Ant Farm

ant farm

While insects aren’t for everyone, owning an ant farm can be a visually stunning experience for some kids, who can watch them care for their habitat.

A small amount of food and water must be added from time to time, but these little critters pretty much take care of themselves.

Brine Shrimp

Called sea monkeys in the past, or sometimes called Fairy Shrimp, these have been a longtime favourite as they are so small, they most often come in a kit that you buy at the pet shop. They are a popular species to culture at home because it is relatively easy to keep a population of them. Petplace.com has some instructions on what you need and how to care for them.

Fish

fish tank

These are a good choice for a starter pet since they don’t need much care, love or affection but they still require daily responsibility.

While goldfish are a popular pick for a pet, some prefer to start out with a single Betta fish, often called a Siamese Fighting Fish. They very colourful and are actually easier to raise those most other breeds of fish.

Tortoises

Be prepared to spend many decades with this non-fuzzy long life favourite, as tortoises can live to around 80 years old. But as an added bonus, they’re non-allergenic due to their lack of fur.

The most common species would be the Hermannís Tortoise, other species include Marginated, Spur-thighed and Horsfieldís. Tortoises require very little care and make great pets for small children.

Hamsters

hamster

After dogs and cats, hamsters are probably the most popular choice. You will need to clean out their cage regularly, but hamsters are cute and fun for kids as a starter pet. We opted for a dwarf hamster for our daughters, and they adored Agent 105 as we named him!

Lego master builder

Birds

bird

Owning a bird is a little bit more challenging than caring for a fish or tortoise, but they’re very social creatures and make excellent pets.

A good choice for a starter is an inexpensive parakeet or canary as more expensive birds like cockatiels and cockatoos which require more care than their cheaper cousins.

Rodents

guineapig

Other than hamsters, there are many other rodent pets to choose from like guinea pigs, gerbils, mice and rats. It’s often recommended to get a same-sex pair of rodents for more social types of rodents.

And to reduce the risk of a child being bitten, these animals should be acquired when they’re younger and gently handled often.

Caring for a pet not only gives children a sense of responsibility, it also offers them educational value, a form of entertainment and enjoyment.

Of course you could always go down the traditional four-legged route and get your kids a dog or cat, but some of these other choices are good for beginner pets.

Aquariums are a wonderful asset for the whole family but, if your child has been hounding you for a pet this might be the best answer, especially if you or anyone in your house suffers from allergies.

Dander can cause a reaction for some allergy sufferers and, it’s fair to say, dogs and cats require much more work. Fish are definitely a lower maintenance, non-allergy pet option! Here are some of the other benefits of a home aquarium for kids.

The Benefits of Owning an Aquarium

#1. It Can Help With Relaxation

Young boy looking aquarium

Children typically have a lot of energy, and some children have more energy than others and have a difficult time shutting it off.

Studies have shown that if a person sits in front of a fish tank for a short amount of time the brain will produce more serotonin, which has been called the “happy chemical“.

#2. It Teaches Responsibility

boy cleaning aquarium

Did you know that responsibility is connected with developing healthy self-esteem? Giving your child chores and responsibilities can help boost their confidence and self-esteem.

Taking care of a fish tank and making it your child’s job to change the filters and feed the fish appropriately, your child is learning what it means to take care of another living creature, which is one of the biggest responsibilities we can take on as humans.

#3. Valuable Learning

There are lots of lessons that come with caring for a pet. Feeding, cleaning, and making sure their needs are met are just a few of the learning experiences offered with owning a fish tank.

As the fish swim around the tank your child will be inspired to explore and wonder. An interest in science is a wonderful thing and children are sponges, so by having a little ecosystem right in your house, they can be inspired to learn.

#4. Creative Inspiration

creative inspiration

A child’s imagination is like nothing else. It is creative and inventive and is unencumbered by life lessons and all those things that make us adults. Having this unending source of creative inspiration in your child’s life is a win-win situation.

The world fish live in is so different from ours it’s difficult not to start imagining what life would be like among the beautiful coral and swimming with the clownfish. As humans we can use diving equipment but the true essence of what it is like to live under water is a mystery to us. And that can inspire your child to be creative and imaginative.

#5. Emotional Health

Even though we can’t pet fish and they don’t curl up with us on the sofa, fish are living creatures and we grow attached to them. Sometimes we feed them too much. Other times we don’t check their water and they die.

When children learn to deal with death it helps them grow to be emotionally healthy adults. Life is about love and loss; losses are part of life and learning about this as a child can help lead to them being a more well adjusted adult.

#6. Better Sleep

child sleeping

There is something soothing about the sound of a fish tank running. The quieter the filtration system the better but, there is no denying that the sound of moving water is helpful when we are trying to sleep. This might be why the sound of the ocean is one of the options on every sound/sleep app out there! So having one in the house can help promote better sleep.

How Can You Keep a Clean House With a Dog?

Vacuum Regularly

Vacuuming the floor for clean house with a dog

Vacuuming your house is of utmost importance when you have a dog. Most dogs are prone to shed their fur or hair everywhere, whether it be the sofa, your bed or on the floor.

Anything other than vacuuming will just shift the dirt from one place to another, with chances of some being left behind. On the other hand, vacuuming sucks in everything. For dogs who shed quite substantially, you may need to vacuum daily to ensure no trace is left behind.

If it is becoming too hectic for you to vacuum all the time, you could get an automatic machine set up. The upside is that they don’t need to be controlled manually and they clean up the entire house following the parameters you have set. It even works automatically when you are not at home or while you’re sleeping, making cleaning even easier!

Opt for Durable Materials

A smart thing to do would be to buy durable, hard-wearing material that will be able to withstand any damage that your dog could possibly do – like staining, biting, tearing or clawing at it. You should especially use durable items in the area where your pet frequents.

Keep Stain Remover Close By

No matter how well you train your dog, sometimes they may get hit by a stomach bug or eat something that they should not have and fall sick. You should be ready for such situations and have a stain remover handy for when accidents happen. Use it as soon as you see a stain because the product works best when you use it as early as possible.

Consistency is the key if you want a well-behaved dog that can be trusted to behave around your children. If trained correctly, the bond between your dog and children can develop into a very special friendship.

However, it is pointless spending weeks working on puppy training for young children to work against you. Teaching your dog to sit beside the dinner table without begging for food is one thing, but it’s a whole lot harder to do while your kids are slipping him treats under the table!

Puppy Training As a Family

#1. Teach Your Dog How to Behave Correctly Around Children

Puppy training with children - Mykidstime

Before your children start helping with puppy training, you need to make sure that Fido knows how to behave appropriately around them.

You can do this by ensuring they have plenty of exposure and positive socialisation with kids, as well as people and animals of all ages and types.

Many puppies can get over-excited when they see new people, and end up jumping and even nipping noses. To avoid this, you need to train your puppy to sit before anyone greets him. This is a really easy command to teach and it will reduce any chance that he’ll jump and hurt or scare your children.

Tip #2: Teach Your Children How to Behave Around Dogs

Equally as important as your dog not getting too excitable around the kids, is your child not becoming too excitable around the dog!

Teach your children to be respectful of your new puppy, how to interact with him calmly and signs to watch out for.

Here are a few things you can teach your children:

  • If a dog jumps up at them, turn around. Help them to understand why we do this – if they run away, screaming and shouting, the dog will only get more excitable and jump even more.
  • If a dog bares their teeth or growls at the child, walk away immediately and stop interacting with them.

Tip #3: Make Sure Your Kids Are Fully Involved

Puppy training with children - Mykidstime

Getting the whole family involved with the puppy training, as long as everyone is doing it consistently, can be a really great bonding experience for everyone.

This doesn’t mean you can leave you children to do the training alone though; you should always be there to supervise, so you can help them to give instructions properly and make sure each command is fully followed through.

Children as young as three or four are capable of understanding how to give a simple command such as ‘sit’ – and it’s important that the dog respects and listens to the youngest member of your family, just as much as the oldest.

Tip #4: Let the Children Use Different Commands

The American Kennel Club recommends giving children different commands, to the ones you (the parent) use to train your dog. This is because kids can be inconsistent in their choice of words, which can confuse your dog. Once your dog has confused a command, it’s really difficult to re-teach him.

So, for example, your dog might respond to ‘wait’ and ‘here’ for you, but for your children, they might train him the same thing, but using different commands such as ‘stay’ and ‘come’.

Tip #5: Encourage Your Children to Ignore Unwanted Behaviour

Puppy training with children - Mykidstime

The most effective training method is using positive reinforcement. This means rewarding the good, and ignoring the bad (as long as no-one is in harm or danger).

For example, if your dog starts chewing on a shoe, just remove the shoe from him and pass him one of his toys to play with.

Children tend to be very loud and can shout if Fido takes one of their special cuddly toys, however it’s important that they learn to either just tell you or, if they’re old enough, react calmly by removing the toy rather than shouting and chasing the dog.

Tip #6: Teach Your Kids How To Use Treats

Dogs are very intuitive and they know who is more likely to give them treats and who is not.

Children should understand that in order for the puppy to have a treat, he needs to follow through on whatever command has been given to him.

If your child gives him a treat before he has fully sat down, or just because they’ve got bored of the training process, the dog will be harder to train by the rest of the family.

Tip #7: Some Easy Tricks for Your Children to Teach Their Dog

Puppy training with children - Mykidstime

You might find that your children tire easily of training the dog simple yet important commands, such as how to walk on leash, and how to stay or heel.

Kids tend to enjoy teaching them more fun tricks, so here is a list of fun things them can teach their furry friend:

  • Sit – A really fun, yet easy and rewarding first command for your child to teach.
  • Shake hands – Your child will enjoy shaking hands in exchange for a treat.
  • Roll – A great trick to show other family members and friends.
  • Get the ‘…’ – Watch your child have great fun as they teach the dog to get his leash, or a certain toy.

Booking a holiday is exciting – choosing the location, the outfits, things for the kids…it all needs to be organised. If this is your first time heading away you might not have even thought about what to do with your pets.

Are you going to ask a friend or family member, are you going to leave them in a kennel/cattery or are you going to let them stay home while you are away?

3 Pet Care Options For When You Travel Away

family dog

There are a few options when it comes to pet care. To help you consider which is going to suit you and your pets best we’ve outlined the options below, including some pros and cons.

#1. Pet Sitter

Using a Pet Sitter is a great way to keep your pets in the same routine they are used to. Much like kids, animals can get a bit unsettled when things change too much.

With a Pet Sitter you can have visits at the times your pets would normally get fed, walked and played with. They get to stay in their own homes and enjoy their usual home comforts.

Where this option might not suit is if your pet gets very lonely when you are away and becomes destructive. But for most – napping on the sofa or playing in the garden (depending if they are in or out pets), and then having a Sitter come and take care of their needs goes down very well.

You also have the added benefit of home security using a Pet Sitter. No-one likes to go away leaving their home looking empty. Having someone call in/out during your holiday means lights can be turned on/off, curtains can be closed/opened and bins put out – all giving your home that occupied look and feel.

#2. Kennels/Cattery

A Kennel/Cattery is a facility you take your pets to rather than leaving them at home. This means you can drop your pets off on your way on holiday and pick them up on your way back.

There are a couple of downsides to this option. Firstly your pet is completely out of routine and secondly your home is left empty for the duration of your holiday.

Having said that, some pets might do better in a kennel if they can’t be left alone at all or are very destructive at home.

#3. Friends /Family

Of course friends and family can be a great option to take care of your pets.

The only downside with family is that sometimes they aren’t available or don’t want to commit to caring for your pets if you are away for a long time.

7 Top Tips to Prepare For Your Pet Holiday Care

Whether you have decided to use an in-home care option for your pets or you are going to leave them in a boarding kennel you need to make sure they have everything they need while you are away.

#1. Preparing the home

Get Your Home Ready

If you are leaving your pets at home then it’s important to get things ready for the Pet Sitter.

  • Have you moved everything out of the way that you don’t want your pets having access to?
  • Have you set up the Pet Cam if you are going to use one? This means you can watch your pets while you are on holiday and check everything is ok.
  • Have you set the heating for your pets? You don’t want to turn the heating off when you are away as your pets will be cold.

#2. Outline Your Pet’s Schedule

Outline Pets Schedule

Whether you are using an in-home pet care option or a kennel it’s important to write out your pets schedule for the person taking care of them.

That includes things like:

  • What time they get fed and how much you need to feed them.
  • How often they get walked and if they have a specific area they get walked in.
  • When they get treats and how many of them.
  • How often the cat litter gets changed/cleaned and what to do with the waste.

#3. Organise Food/Treats

Organise Food and Treats

Most pets have the same if not very similar food and treats all the time. It’s therefore important to make sure you have listed out the amount and type of food that you want to be fed to your pets.

Make sure if you have a special measure for your food that you leave that along with the exact amounts.

The more specific you can be with feeding the better – you don’t want your pets to gain or lose weight while you are away.

#4. Get Their Bed Ready

Get Their Bed Ready

Make sure you organise your pets bedding, bed and any blankets they are used to having when they sleep.

If you are worried about your pets being anxious while you are away then it can be advisable to leave them with an item of your clothing. The familiar smell will help them feel more comfortable and relaxed.

#5. Organise Their Activities/Toys

Make Sure They Have Toys

Toys are a great way to keep your pets active when you aren’t there. If your dog gets bored easily interactive toys can be a great way to stop them being destructive in your absence.

It’s also fun for your Pet Sitter to have plenty of toys to play with your pets. Cats love to play with feathers on sticks, balls – anything that moves really!

And what dog doesn’t love some type of game they can play – maybe catch, or fetch or something less strenuous?

#6. Get The Supplies Ready

Arrange Their Supplies

Have you made sure that you have enough of the regular supplies – things like poo bags, cat litter, cleaning supplies, any medication etc.

These type of things you might be used to picking up at the shops when you are about to run out. But when you are planning to go on holiday it’s important to make sure you have enough of everything so you don’t run out.

#7. List All Emergency Information

Make a list of emergency contact information for your pet care provider.

Include your vet information, an emergency contact, plumber contact (in case of burst pipes), and electrician’s details and so on.

Being organised when you travel away means that your pet care provider is less likely to need to contact you when you are on holiday and your pets will receive the best care possible in your absence.

We recently took the plunge and got a family dog – a cockapoo puppy. It was a bit of a shock to the system so I thought it might be useful to give you my insights into the experience.

Here are 10 things I wish I’d known before we got a family dog:

What I Wish I Had Known Before Getting a Family Dog

We chose a cockapoo puppy for 2 reasons. Firstly we have 2 allergy-prone family members and we needed a dog that wouldn’t cause too many allergy problems. Secondly, cockapoos are a good mix of cleverness plus sociability, and a close relative had a cockapoo so we could see first hand what the breed was like.

Scout is a male puppy – we had the choice between a female or male and we fell in love with him. Having grown up with dogs, both my husband and I thought we knew the score but guess what, we didn’t!

#1. It’s like having a baby again

Our kids are 11 and 14 so we had completely forgotten baby-time but when you have a new puppy you have to remember it’s a baby and it needs extra attention.

The first few nights you have the puppy, it will howl and bark during the night and the best thing to do is to leave it so it gets used to being by itself at night.

My tip: You can try leaving some music or the radio on, but it is literally the first few nights of pain that you need to get through and it does stop.

#2. Your kids want the nice bits

Child and puppy

Despite promises they make that they will absolutely help with the dog and take care of it, your children will want all the cuddles and pats but they won’t want to do poop patrol!

You will end up doing the bulk of the caring for the pet, so be prepared for that.

#3. Someone has to get up at weekends

Yep, it’s back to taking it in turns to get up at weekends as we are out of the young kids stage and had got used to being able to sleep in a bit. During holidays we ended up having a rota to make it fair so everyone took their turn.

#4. You will need pet training help

dog training

Unless you’re already a dog trainer, don’t think you can train the dog yourself as you won’t manage. It’s really worth paying for either a trainer to come to your house or go to dog classes. We did the former because there were no classes running near us when we needed to get him started. And the earlier the better.

According to our trainer, most dogs settle into their habits by 16 weeks of age, so if you can train them on some of the key things before then, that will make your life a lot easier.

Before training, we were starting to get frustrated and we also didn’t understand how dogs’ minds work, so having that explained really changed things for the better for us.

#5. Your vacations will change

You now have to think about:

  • where you are going to spend your holidays near or far
  • are you going to take the dog, in which case you need to research pet-friendly options
  • are you going to leave them behind, in which case you need to organise care and factor in the cost to your holiday budget
  • If it’s a male dog, most kennels and dog care require them to be neutered with all their injections, including kennel cough, in place. So you need to organise the timing in the first year so the neutering has taken place in time.

#6. You need some back up

Kind of like having back up for your kids in case you can’t get to school in time or need to spend a night away with work, you may need some back up for your dog. You might need to find a dog-sitter who is flexible and willing to take the dog for you on an ad-hoc short-term basis, or ask friends or family if they can be your back up for a night or so if required.

Don’t Miss…

Would like your child to be more independent? This list of essential life skills will stand them in good stead for years to come.

#7. You will find yourself out in all weathers

Yes – all weathers! Dogs need walking and you can’t really use the poor weather as an excuse. Just wrap up warmly and in suitable clothes, and once you get over the initial blast as you go outside, I guarantee you will end up feeling better for the fresh air.

#8. Puppies chew stuff

puppy chewing slipper

I thought this was a cliché, but it’s true. Puppies chew stuff. You have to get used to putting things up out the way and not leaving things lying around as you used to.

Apart from slippers, our puppy loves sneaking a sock or a pair of underpants off the drying rack.

#9. They get bored

All dogs need a bit of stimulation, especially when most of the family is out all day. They end up chewing things out of boredom.

Our vet recommended the Kong toys which you fill with a few bits of kibble or some peanut butter, freeze and then the dog will spend a good while trying to lick the treats out of the toy.

You can find the Kong toys on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com (NB If you buy through our links we get a small commission).

#10. The cheapest dog equipment is not always the best

We bought a collar and lead to start with that were the cheapest and they just didn’t last. Puppy chewed the clip on the collar and the lead was the cord type and it just didn’t work properly.

While you don’t need to go for the most expensive items either, beware of the false economy of buying cheap items and needing to replace them regularly.

Final Tips on Getting a Family Dog

Puppy family dog

Before you think this has all been a negative experience, here are some of the wonderful things about our new puppy and how the family has reacted:

  • The children are learning to be more responsible about their pet.
  • We are definitely more active as a family and I am so much more active myself as the primary walker!
  • The greeting from our dog when you walk in the door is so delightful it makes you smile every time.
  • When he cuddles up and snoozes on your lap, it’s very sweet and makes you feel so good.
  • Burying your nose in the dog’s fur is a great way to calm down!
