I am not one of those mothers that can do wrap-around Heidi-style braids or ones that seem to effortlessly twist and turn around my child’s head. No. We are a simple plait kind of a house – maybe a French plait if I have lots of time, patience and she sits still long enough. Definitely nothing fancy! So when my daughter came home with a request for a spider bun like her friend had rocked up with, I panicked!

Having now come out the other side of the Halloween hair drama, I wanted to share some of the other fun Halloween hairstyles that your kids will love.

Princess Piggies used little plastic spider rings, threaded through plaits, to create a spooky Halloween hairstyle that will thrill little kids!

I tried this with normal plaits (and French) and it worked well – having a long-handled comb helped to pull the hair through the spider rings.

There’s nothing Benoit Nicol doesn’t know about the benefits of essential oils. The Nature of Things is a beautifully presented collection of the highest quality, from vanilla oil to lavender (from €7), and they’re now widely available at more than 60 retailers. Nicol can put together personalised boxes of oils – a thoughtful gift.

Flying Wild’s Arno Schouwenburg, based in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, traded publishing for beekeeping back in 2012, starting his artisan, eco-conscious business as a way to “share the goodness of the hives”. Raw honey and natural beeswax are used to make everything from candles to facial oils and massage balms, only using organic, unrefined ingredients.

The whole range is great value, simple and sustainable. Arno is famed for his wonderful customer service, too.

Ground, created by spa expert Peigin Crowley, crafts natural plant-based ingredients to create simple, clean self-care. All of the products are handmade in small batches by Peigín in Cork, using vegan ingredients; organic where possible, and blended with sincere intention, to soothe the soul.

Ground is exclusive to Brown Thomas, and it’s a cleverly designed, thoughtful selection of soothing natural treats – the bath salts are divine, and refillable (from €30).

Claire recommends that teens double cleanse the face in both the morning and the evening. She emphasises the importance of double cleansing as it removes excess oil that has been produced overnight, as well as dirt or impurities that build up on the face during the day.

Don’t scrub too hard when you cleanse the skin and make sure the water isn’t too hot. This minimises bacteria build-up and will help to regulate oil production, which tends to go into overdrive during the teenage years.

For acne break-outs on other parts of the body, such as the back, chest and neck, Claire recommends using a cleanser on these areas after washing and conditioning hair.

Large pores can become an issue in adolescent skin, which can be quite distressing for some teenagers. Unfortunately, there is no way to close these open pores, but Claire notes that you can minimise their appearance.

To do so, Claire recommends using a few quick spritzes of a toning mist after cleansing the face. Toners also help to brighten and even out the skin.

Last, but certainly not least, Claire is quick to stress the importance of moisturising the skin.

Claire notes that many teens with very oily skin subscribe to the myth that they can’t moisturise their skin because they don’t want to add any extra oil or sebum to the skin and run the risk of further break-outs. However, Claire stresses that it is very important to strike the right balance of oil and water in the face’s skin to keep it moisturised and happy.

Moisturising your face doesn’t mean you need to use heavy, rich or oily creams. There are lots of great lightweight facial moisturisers out there that will do the job, while also keeping oil production under control.

When choosing a facial moisturiser, be sure to look out for one with SPF included in it as prevention is always better than a cure when it comes to protection from the sun and UV rays.

• Teenagers should start a good skin care routine at around 12 or 13 years old to help keep the skin bright and healthy. 
• When buying skincare products and cosmetics, avoid products that contain comedogenic ingredients (these are ingredients that cause break-outs). Some comedogenic ingredients include mineral oil and lanolin which are heavy and greasy. They not only cause break-outs, but also aggravate any existing break-outs. 
• To avoid undoing the good work of a decent skincare routine, those who use makeup should deep-clean their makeup brushes once every week or two and also give each brush a quick spritz with a brush cleaner after every application.
• Try to resist the temptation to pop spots as it just further damages the skin, can lead to more break-outs and even scarring.

To fully immerse yourself in the at home spa experience, you need to set the scene. Soft, fluffy towels and a fluffy robe, slippers, dimmed lights, scented candles or essential oils burning and soothing spa music. I find instrumental music is best to get me fully relaxed. Declutter the space and just have what you need to hand. This usually includes a healthy smoothie to enjoy as I relax in the bath.

Turn off the tech and do some breathing exercises to help clear the mind. Remember this is your time to recharge so forget about all that is going on at work or at home and get ready to relax.

As the bath is filling, use a body brush to dry brush skin in small, circular movements. This will help increase circulation and blood flow and begins the exfoliation process at the same time.

Fill the bath with steaming hot water. Add your bath product of choice and immerse yourself in the warm water to soothe away the stresses of the day. If you don’t have access to a bath, turn up the temperature in the shower to create steam which will open the pores.

After shampooing your hair, treat it with a mask or deep conditioner to bring it back to life. I usually wash my hair beforehand in the shower and add the mask before getting into the bath.

Exfoliate, cleanse and condition with your favourite face mask. Before scrubbing your face clean and moisturising for maximum spa effect.

Don’t forget your body too. The dry brush will have started the exfoliation process, but I also use a scrub before applying oils to moisturise and treat my skin for a healthy glow.

Once out of the bath, I massage my hands and feet with lotion and work on my cuticles to keep them healthy.

Along with moisturising my face, I use an all over body moisturiser to hydrate my skin. My daughters like to use a tinted body cream during the winter months for a natural looking healthy glow.
