Katrina, Harvey, Sandy, Irma, Ophelia…storm names often linger in our memories and see a dip in popularity from new parents.

If you’re expecting a baby in the coming months, you may want to avoid the newly released list of 2023/24 winter storm names!

Storm Names: Use or Avoid?

Every year, meteorological offices around the world release a slew of names that will be used in order to identify each and every storm. Over the years we have become increasingly familiar with some of the most momentous both here and in the US, including Katrina, Irma, Ophelia and many more. The result is that those names see a drastic drop in popularity with new parents who might otherwise have considered them for their baby.

According to the US Social Security Administration, which tracks the most popular names in the United States, Katrina was at its most popular in 1982 when 3,323 babies were given the name. In 2005, the year Hurricane Katrina struck, the name saw a drastic drop to 1,327 babies – dropping consistently each year since to just 190 in 2016.

While unusual names, such as Ophelia, may not recover in popularity for several years, it is most likely that classic names won’t be overly affected.

Why Are Storms Named?

most popular baby names ireland 2021

This naming of storms by National Meteorological Services has been shown to raise awareness of severe weather and help with citizen safety.

A storm is named by a National Met Service when Orange or Red level winds are forecast to impact over a wide land area. Orange or Red level gusts can occur in exposed areas without the event being named. In addition there may be high impact precipitation (rain/snow) associated with the storm system.

“The naming of storms by National Met Services (as well as colour coding weather warnings as Yellow, Orange or Red) provides a clear, authoritative and consistent message to the public and prompts people to take action to prevent harm to themselves or to their property,” explains Evelyn Cusack, Head of Forecasting for Met Éireann.

“The storm names also add an extra interest for people with particular excitement in a family when one of their names appears in the list. We mostly pick names that can be easily pronounced, but some are less generally recognised.”

A to Z of Winter Storm Names 2023/24

Once a storm is named by any National Met Service globally, that name is retained if the storm moves out of that jurisdiction and into other waters. For example, in the past we have seen Ophelia and Lorenzo, both named by the National Hurricane Center (USA), and Emma by IPMA (Portugal) hit Irish shores.

Starting with the letter A, each of the 2023/24 winter storms will be allocated a name. Some will be stronger than others, and we may not even be aware of some as the die down before becoming a nuisance, but let’s hope we don’t make it through all of them…!

Storm Names in West Europe (Ireland, UK and The Netherlands)

storm names for 2023 24

The UK and Ireland’s met offices began naming storms in 2015, and were joined by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) in 2019 to form the West group. The Southwest group consists of Portugal, Spain, France and Belgium.

These names have been released jointly by Met Éireann, the UK’s Met Office, and the Dutch National Weather Service (KNMI). The choices are based on suggestions from the public and aim to reflect the diversity of each of these countries.

Storm Names in the United States

Atlantic Storms

Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms had been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center.

The NHC works with a set list of names that are used in rotation and recycled every six years (i.e. the 2019 list will be used again in 2025). The only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. If that occurs, the offending name is stricken from the list and another name is selected to replace it. Several names have been retired since the lists were created, including in recent years Katrina, Harvey, Irma, Sandy, Irene, Matthew and Florence.

The NHC names also run in a January to December calendar. The current season of 2023 storm names includes: Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harold, Idalia, Jose, Katia, Lee, Margot, Nigel, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince, Whitney.

The names for 2024 will be:

Nameberry has announced the hottest baby name trends for 2023, which reflects a change in outlook as parents react to what has been a very unsettling and intense time.

New parents of 2023 are seeking upbeat, bright names with a retro vibe, but also with a feeling of a new world and reinventing our style and mood.

Interestingly, Nameberry also notes that today’s parents are more conscious than ever about the statement their choice of baby name makes: about them, about their family identity, about their place in the cultural context.

Baby Name Trends for 2023

Maximalist Names

unique baby names that are popular

Maximalist names hail from myth and legend, from history and fantasy, from literature and anime. Recent pop culture phenomena from Bridgerton to The Witcher have popularized maximalist aesthetics such as high fantasy and regencycore. So this is naturally impacting baby  names as well. Maximalist names sound strong and confident!

Among the fastest-rising names on Nameberry so far this year in this trend are names like

  • Amadeus
  • Astrophel
  • Myfanwy
  • Mazikeen
  • Persephone
  • Perseus
  • Wednesday
  • Wolfgang

1980s Retro Feel Names

baby name trends

2022 saw the return of the mullet, Kate Bush back at #1 (thanks Stranger Things!), and nostalgia for makeup and clothes from the 1980s.

Nameberry predicts that 2023 will see the start of a revival of 80s-inspired baby names but rather than the usual names that were top of the lists during the 1980s (the Michaels and the Jessicas), they’re projecting more quirky, retro-style names like

  • Carey
  • Ferris
  • Jeanie
  • Laurel
  • Robin
  • Sandy
  • Sloane
  • Travis

Gilded Names

Nature baby names

Golden names are predicted to be one of the top trends of 2023 as parents want names that feel bright, luxurious and optimistic.

Names that shimmer and shine, that reflect or reference gold, royalty, light, gods and more. Here are some top names in this category:

  • Apollo
  • Atarah
  • Goldie
  • Helios
  • Lux
  • Sovereign
  • Sterling
  • Sunshine
  • Zora

Neo-Cowboy Names

baby name trends 2023

With modern life feeling uncertain, full of turmoil, parents are moving towards names that evoke nature, simpler times etc. Right in there are what are called “Neo-cowboy” names. Names that evoke a rugged, outdoorsy, back-to-basics style are right on trend for 2023.

Names ending with -s, -er or -ett are in there as well as names from popular new shows such as Outer Range, Yellowstone and The English.

  • Briggs
  • Dutton
  • Ennis
  • Reeve
  • Rhett
  • Royal
  • Tex
  • Truett
  • Walker

Names Ending in I

top baby names 2020

Cross-cultural names that are funky, fresh and can travel seamlessly between languages and cultures are here to stay. While names like Anna or Leo have been around for a long time, and A and O ending names continue to be popular, they’ve now been joined by names ending in I.

Popular celebrities are fuelling this trend (think Bibi, Gigi, Nori and Lili). And the latest name to jump up the Nameberry charts is Leni, chosen by Joe Wicks for his new daughter.

Names in this trend include:

  • Avni
  • Esti
  • Lumi
  • Mimi
  • Rafi
  • Suki
  • Zuri

X-tra Names

baby names

New parents of 2023 are on the hunt for names with the X factor – beginning, middle or end, X is having its moment.

From mythological names to names from pop culture to more traditional names, X is definitely its presence felt in trending baby names:

  • Beaux
  • Bellatrix
  • Felix
  • Hendrix
  • Huxley
  • Maine
  • Onyx
  • Pixie
  • Xerxes

Adjective Names

baby name trends 2023

This is an interesting new trend, using adjectives for names, they seem to feel more intentional than aspirational. Started by celebrities (aren’t most trends?!) such as Nick Cannon (Moroccan, Golden, Legendary, Powerful), Chris Brown (Lovely) and Jessica Hart (Glorious), adjectives definitely take names to a new level.

Here are some examples of adjective names trending now:

  • Bright
  • Celestial
  • Divine
  • Heavenly
  • Lovely
  • Lucky
  • Noble
  • Stellar
  • Supreme
  • Valiant
  • Winsome

One syllable baby names are becoming an increasingly popular choice by parents for their new arrival. There are lots of reasons to opt for a one syllable name. Perhaps you want to give your child a name that is less likely to be shortened, maybe your surname is long (or a bit unwieldy), and there is no doubt that a shorter name is easier to pronounce, write and spell.

Every year the US Social Security Administration reports on the top names registered during the year. The 2021 lists are out now, with new entries on the top 20 lists for both boys names and girls names.

These lists can be helpful for parents-to-be looking for inspiration, or looking to avoid the most popular names. Is your child’s name on the list?

Top Baby Names 2021 in the USA

According to the US Social Security Administration, the top baby name for girls last year (2021) was Olivia while Liam was the top for boys.

As far as girls names go, the top 2 have stayed the same (Olivia and Emma) with Charlotte and Ava staying in the top 5 but Amelia coming up. While for boys names, 4 of the top 5 names stayed the same (Liam, Noah, Oliver, Elijah) while William dropped down and James popped up to 5th spot.

Further down the girls list, Camila is a new entry to the top 20 girls names, and I was interested to see Elizabeth staying in the girls’ top 20 as that’s my eldest daughter’s middle name and she was named after two great aunts of mine.

For boys, classic names like Henry, Theodore and Michael still remain popular.
