With a newborn on the way, are you wondering how your first born will react? You might (or might not!) be well-prepared for the arrival of the new baby in the house, but your first born has no idea how their little world is about to change. There are lots of ways you can help in preparing your child for a new baby and their new life as an older sibling with simple strategies that help explain why babies require so much special attention and care.

Children of different ages will react differently to a new baby. Knowing how to address a new sibling with each age group will make it easier for you to help them to handle the changes in your family. Here are a few ideas to help you head off feelings of sibling jealousy and resentment and send the message that you’ll love your child just as much as always, and get them really excited about meeting the new baby.

Preparing Your Child for a New Sibling by Age

Under 2s

preparing your child for a new sibling

Children between age 1 and 2 will not understand much about what it means to have a new brother or sister. However, you can help smooth the way by letting your child hear you talk about the “new baby” and feel your excitement. They may not understand why you are excited, but your attitude will rub off on them so that they will feel excited too.

It’s important to give yourself a guilt break too. Keep in mind you may not be able to satisfy the needs of both children all the time – especially not by yourself. If you feel overwhelmed, look to your partner, family and friends for support and an extra set of arms or two.

You can also:

  • Look at picture books about a new baby. At the very least, your child will become familiar with words like “sister,” “brother,” and “new baby.”
  • When the new baby arrives, try to do something special for your older child. Reassure them that they are still loved.
  • Maybe give them a special gift like a teddy or doll to look after, and cuddle and feed while you are looking after the baby.
  • If your family is comfortable using the baby’s name before he or she is born, that’s an excellent way for younger kids to get used the idea.
  • Once baby does arrive, let them spend some time with each parent, grandparents, or another special adult for some quality one-on-one time without the baby.

Age 2 to 4 Years

At this age, your child is still very attached to you and does not yet understand how to share you with others. Your child also may be very sensitive to change and may feel threatened by the idea of a new family member.

Here are some suggestions that may help ease your young child into being a big brother or big sister:

  • Don’t tell them too early into the pregnancy. Months can seem a very long time at this age. Explain it to your child when you start buying nursery furniture or baby clothes or if he starts asking about mom’s growing “tummy”. Picture books for pre-schoolers can be very helpful. Try to tell your child before they hear about the new baby from someone else; this will also give them time to prepare and get excited (or, at least, accepting) of baby’s impending arrival.
  • Prepare them to share. Explain that the baby will be cute and cuddly, but will also cry and take a lot of your time and attention. Try holding your toddler and ask how the rocking motion makes them feel, and then explain that cuddling makes newborns happy because it reminds them of being inside your tummy. Remind your child that there will still be plenty of hugs for them too, and you will love them just as much after the baby is born as you do now.
  • Make sure that your older child knows that it may be a while before they can play with the new baby. Your child might expect a new baby sibling to be ready for action right away, so it’s a good idea to paint a realistic picture of what life with a newborn baby will be like. Explain that babies don’t do much more than eat, sleep, cry, poo and pee at first, and that they can’t be much of a playmate right away. If you have any video footage of your older child as a newborn, use it to illustrate this point.
  • Together, plan some fun activities that they can play with the baby such as singing or dancing for their new sibling, letting the baby squeeze their finger, talking to the baby using different voices, or holding a soft toy for them to look at. Explain that there’s nothing newborns like more than a human face, especially when it belongs to the best big sibling in the world!
new sibling
  • Your first born will probably find a brand new sibling really strange-looking. To help manage expectations, pull out some photos of your toddler when he or she was a newborn and give the lowdown on some of the things that make infants different from toddlers. For example, belly buttons, crunched-up legs, floppy necks and soft spots (which is one reason to be extra gentle with their head).
  • Involve them in planning for the baby. This will make them less jealous. Let them shop with you for baby items. Show them their own baby pictures. If you are going to use some of their old baby things, let them play with them a bit before you get them ready for the new baby. Buy your child a doll so they can take care of their own baby.
  • Prepare your child for when you are in the hospital. They may be confused when you leave for the hospital, so explain who will look after them, what will happen, and that you will be back with the new baby in a few days.
  • Think about other major changes to your child’s routine. If you can, finish toilet training or switching from a cot to a bed before the baby arrives. If that is not possible, put them off until after the baby is settled in at home. Otherwise, your child may feel overwhelmed by trying to learn new things on top of all the other changes caused by the new baby.
  • Don’t worry if your child regresses a little. For example, your toilet-trained child might suddenly start having “accidents”, or he might want to take a bottle. This is normal and is your older child’s way of making sure they still have your love and attention. Instead of telling them to act their age, let them have the attention they need. As children grow, it’s important to show them how proud you are that they’re growing into ‘big boys’ or ‘big girls’. This can prepare them for seeing themselves as ‘big brothers’ or ‘big sisters’. Don’t expect them to act “older” just because they are an older sibling though.
  • Set aside special time for your older child. Read, play games, listen to music, or simply talk together. Show him that you love him and want to do things together. Also, make him feel a part of things by having him cuddle next to you when you feed the baby. Plan quiet activities that you can do for when the baby is sleeping, but make them feel like they have your attention.
  • Ask family and friends to spend a little time with your older child when they come to see the new baby. This will help them to feel special and not left out of all the excitement. They might also like to give them a small gift when they bring gifts for the baby.
  • Have your older child spend time with partners or special adults. A new baby presents a great opportunity for them to get some extra attention.

Don’t Miss…

No one ever said parenting was easy! With that in mind, here are 15 positive parenting techniques every parent should know.

School Children Aged 5 Years +

Children older than 5 years have the ability to understand what a new baby will mean and for you to discuss any concerns they may have. Whilst they are usually not quite as threatened by a new baby as younger children are, they may resent the attention the new baby gets.

To prepare your school-aged child for a new baby:

  • Tell your child what is happening in age-appropriate language. Explain what having a new baby means and what changes may affect them – both the good and the not so good (e.g. night crying).
  • Have your older child help get things ready for the new baby by helping to decorate the baby’s room, picking out clothes, or buying nappies.
  • If possible, have your older child come to the hospital soon after the baby is born so they feel part of the changes to the family.
  • When you bring the new baby home, make your older child feel that they have a role to play in caring for the baby. Tell them they can hold the baby, although they must ask you first. Praise them when they are gentle and loving toward the baby and when they help you out.
  • Do not overlook your older child’s needs and activities. Try and maintain their activities such as extra-curricular lessons, groups, school, etc. so that their routine isn’t affected.
  • Let them know how much you love them. Make an effort to spend some time alone with them each day; use that as a chance to remind them how special they are.

Whatever age your children are when you are preparing them for a sibling, along with reassuring your first-born, be careful that other well-meaning adults don’t accidentally undermine your efforts. Discourage comments or jokes implying that the new baby will somehow replace your first child, or that you’re going to be too busy to show him love and attention.

Baby Travel

  • Approved rear-facing car seat (preferably with Isofix base)
  • Pram/Buggy that reclines flat for newborns
  • Baby carrier, sling or wrap (they allow mum or dad to be hands-free)
  • Car window sun shade
  • 2-3 blankets for out and about

TIP: See when Check It Fits is in your town next, they will install your infant’s car seat free of charge and ensure it’s fitted correctly.

Baby Changing

  • Cotton wool and a small bowl of cooled boiled water (for babies under six weeks)
  • Unscented baby wipes

  • A changing bag with plenty of pockets to carry all your essentials whenever you leave the house

For disposable nappies:

  • Biodegradable nappy liners
  • A bucket with a lid (for at home)
  • A wet bag (for when you’re out and about)

Some kind of baby changing unit is handy, but you don’t necessarily have to buy a custom baby changing table. You can get a chest of drawers that facilitates a changing mat on the top, so it doubles up for storage as well. Alternatively if you want to avoid extra furniture or need to save space, a changing mat on the floor does a perfectly good job.

  • Baby soap (try to avoid products with ingredients including parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, phenoxyethanol and glycol)

A baby bathtub can be useful but isn’t essential and takes up space – just use the bath, or even the sink during the first weeks.

Baby Care

  • Digital thermometer
  • Baby nail clippers or nail file
  • Bulb nasal aspirator to clear any snuffles
  • Soft brush and comb
  • Play mat for tummy time

Save Your Money: The Non-Essentials

Sometimes it’s better not to jump on trends and splash the cash because it’s the ‘in’ thing. Here are a few items you just don’t need:

  • Nappy disposal bin (just walk out to the bin!)
  • Baby shoes (not until they can walk)
  • Designer baby clothes (they’ll grow out of them so quickly, and particularly avoid if they are ‘handwash only’)
  • Baby robes or dressing gowns
  • Wipe warmers (who even thinks of these things?)
  • Bath thermometer (be old school and use your elbow)
  • A nappy stacker (it won’t stay stacked and they are a nuisance to fill)
  • Clothes that go over a newborn’s head (you will understand in time)
  • Fussy clothes with lots of buttons, zips, etc
  • Cot bumper, cushions or cot toys (they may be pretty, but they are considered dangerous for young babies)
  • Scented baby skincare products (newborn skin is very delicate, so stick to a few simple baby-friendly items)

Where to Buy

I asked around a few friends and some favourite baby retailers include:

  • Mothercare both online shop as well as stores around the country (UK and Ireland)
  • Bellababy has an online shop and stores in Cork, Maynooth, Galway and Dublin (Ireland)
  • Babydirect.com.au online store (Australia)
  • Buy Buy Baby online store (US)

Getting ready to give birth isn’t just about picking baby names and packing your hospital bag. As you embark on a rollercoaster to parenthood, you will need to prepare your body and mind for the changes to come. Prepare to give birth with these great tips that will have you physically, mentally and emotionally ready for delivery day.

There are so many exciting things ahead in your pregnancy – picking baby names, buying teeny tiny clothes, kitting out the nursery, choosing all the fun baby gear, indulging in cravings for cake, and so much more!

However, there are also a number of things that can cause stress and sleepless nights, which is the last thing you need while pregnant. These tips will really help you to get ‘in the zone’ and lead you to a positive birth experience.

If you’re expecting a baby in the coming weeks or months, here are some things you will need to consider as you prepare to give birth.

Prepare to Give Birth: Get in the Mindset

Remember Your Due Date is Just an Estimate

Your estimated due date is calculated by adding 280 days to the first day of your last menstrual period, however, the chance of delivering on your assigned date is rare. Your baby is likely to come at any time between 37 weeks and 42 weeks.

Fixating on a particular date can often lead to feelings of disappointment when that dates comes and goes, and you’re still pregnant! It can also result in well-meaning calls and texts to see if you’ve popped yet – cute the first time, but annoying from then on..

If anyone asks when you’re due, give them a ballpark – the end of November, mid-June, etc.

Organise Your Maternity Leave

Man and pregnant woman looking at laptop

In Ireland, if you’re pregnant while in employment you will be entitled to 26 weeks maternity leave, with the option of 16 weeks additional unpaid maternity leave.

You will be required to give your employer a medical certificate confirming your pregnancy, and you must give your employer at least four weeks’ written notice of your intention to take maternity leave.

You may find, however, that giving your employer confirmation earlier can smooth the way if you need to leave work for check ups, and also help if you have a physical or demanding job that needs to be reviewed for health and safety.

Plan for Paternity Leave

Dads in Ireland are now entitled to take four weeks of paternity leave in one continuous block anytime in the 26 weeks following baby’s birth. You can apply for paternity benefit online at www.mywelfare.ie. Don’t leave it too late, you will need all the help you can get.

Book Your Antenatal Classes

Prepare to give birth by stocking up on informative advice and tips while building your confidence. Antenatal classes are usually free at your chosen maternity hospital and cover various topics, including making birth plans, how to look after yourself during and after pregnancy, pain relief, what to expect in labour, and how to care for your baby. It is recommended to start your classes 8-10 weeks before your baby is due.

Develop a Positive State of Mind

first and second pregnancy

If is entirely normal to be nervous, to fear the pain or to be worried about how the birth will go – and, for that reason, it is really worth considering hypnobirthing.

Hypnobirthing combines the knowledge of birth physiology with techniques to help women achieve the birth experiences they desire. It is natural hypnosis and helps put things in their true perspective while also helping you to stay calm, relaxed and in control. Other benefits include faster recovery, better sleep and it can promote bonding with your baby.

Avoid Traumatic Tales

Everyone has that one friend, neighbour or well-meaning auntie who has a once-in-a-blue-moon drama story to share. It’s really important to try not to listen to any unhelpful horror stories before you have your baby, especially if you are feeling nervous or anxious.

Remember, for every bad experience there are lots more mums with a positive story to tell.

Take Care of Your Body

Looking after your health during pregnancy is extremely important, especially as your due date approaches. Eat plenty of whole healthy foods high in protein, keep hydrated, get plenty of rest and exercise regularly – even if it just a short 15 minute walk each day, try to keep active.

Not only will regular exercise help give you the strength and endurance you will need for the latter stages of pregnancy, but will also help you handle the physical stress of labour.

Prepare Your Hospital Bag in Advance

As you approach the final month of pregnancy, it is a good idea to have your bags packed and ready to go so you aren’t grabbing things in a panic. Leave it somewhere where it will be easy to grab in a hurry, and keep the stress to a minimum.

Start by getting the new baby’s clothes washed and dried, then set out all your essentials for packing. Be mindful of the space available on the wards and pack lightly. Some women opt to have a labour ward bag and another bag for their stay in hospital after birth. Remember, if you forget anything your partner, a family member or close friends can get it and drop it into you.

Prepare Your Family

Pregnant mom and child walking outside

If this is your second or subsequent pregnancy, it’s time to start preparing your child for a new sibling coming soon. Younger toddlers and preschoolers may not be too enamoured with the idea of a new arrival, while older children may need a little reassurance that you’ll still have time for them. Make plans for who will look after the children when you go into labour – including a middle of the night plan, just in case.

If this is your first pregnancy, you may need to plan for things like pet sitters or someone to drive you to the hospital. Whatever your plans, make sure to set them well in advance so there is no panic as D-day approaches.

Practice Mindfulness

New research has proven that practising mindfulness can help protect the health and wellbeing of both mums and babies. Fear of the unknown affects everyone, but with the right mindfulness skills, mothers-to-be can learn to cope with their fears while also decreasing the risk of prenatal and postnatal depression.

Think About Pain Relief

As you approach the final trimester of pregnancy you may want to consider your pain relief options. There are several ways of helping you cope with pain in labour. Some women are happy with gentle massage or spending time in water, while others prefer pain-relieving drugs such as gas and air, pethidine or an epidural. Discuss your options with your midwife or obstetrician to find out what’s right for you.

Whatever you plan for, it is always worth keeping an open mind. You may find that your labour progresses quicker or slower than expected, and your decision around pain relief may need to evolve.

Pick a Birth Partner

woman and man laughing

Your birth partner can be your spouse, a friend or family member – and the important decision factor is someone who will keep you calm and focussed, and who you trust to speak up for you.

Ahead of your baby’s birth, plan some time with your birth partner so you can let him/her know your wishes. Tell them how you would like to be supported in labour and cover every eventuality. Birth partners may feel a little helpless and lost in the labour suite, however with pre-made plans they have a clear indication of what is expected of them while being able to vocalise your wishes if you need some additional support.

Massage Your Perineum

It may sound gross to some, but one way to prepare to give birth is by massaging your perineum ahead of your due date. Regular massage increases the elasticity of the perineum by improving the blood flow and ability to stretch more easily – meaning less pain during labour.

Research has shown that perineal trauma and tearing during delivery are less likely to happen with a perineal massage.

Trust Your Instincts

If you have any worries, reach out to your care provider immediately. And finally, try to relax and take it easy in these last few weeks of pregnancy because once the baby is here, your life will change forever – in a good way!

IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation can be a long, costly and difficult journey for a couple, and success rate is not guaranteed. Mother, Bel Messer tells her journey in IVF: A Mother’s Story.

Sign up for our free Newsletter stuffed full of ideas, competitions and offers. PS Did we mention it’s free?

Infertility is debilitating. It is all consuming. It can be hard. In fact, quite possibly it was the most difficult time in my entire life to date. Trying to be joyful at baby shower’s, your best friend’s baby’s birth, the woman in the checkout in front of you enjoying her child for just being a child – all of these times can be really hard.

Facts

  • An astounding 1 in 5 woman suffer infertility.
  • IVF costs. A lot.
  • The lucky ones who have the means to afford IVF, are struggling with a constant internal dialogue of pro’s and con’s, what if’s and maybe just one more go’s.
  • IVF success rate is ~1 in 3, but varies according to age and other factors.
  • There is no age in particular that a woman trying to conceive a baby should go and see a specialist. If they have been actively trying for 12 months or more, then that may be the perfect time.
  • There is a blood test your specialist can run that determines the egg stores remaining in your ovaries. A great first step. This test revealed to us the time frame we had for a possible natural pregnancy.
  • IVF is most definitely not for the weak – a strong will and thick skin are an absolute requirement.

I already had two children with my husband and was only 30 when we became infertile. When the time came that we wanted another baby desperately we saw the most fabulous fertility doctor. He ran the blood test on me and I was saddened and quite shocked by the news that I, at 30 had the egg stores of a 45 year old woman.

As most people are aware, we as women are born with the eggs we will have for our entire lives, we don’t reproduce them, and so we realised then just how lucky we were to have had children at an early age.

My Rollercoaster Journey Starts

My doc started us with timed intercourse with egg stimulation. Then we moved to artificial insemination with egg stimulation. After further testing, we found that my eggs were unable to travel from my ovaries to my womb. This was the reason I couldn’t become pregnant on my own. I’d had an ectopic pregnancy also and my right fallopian tube removed. The left tube was damaged beyond repair.

Support

My friends didn’t understand, they weren’t able to support me the way they wanted to – it wasn’t that they didn’t try, it was most probably due to the mental state I was in during the exercise. I was unable to be the person I used to be. I was changed throughout. I put a hold on contact with most of my friends – I learned to whom I could and couldn’t speak, based on their reactions.

I didn’t want to hear things like, “at least you have two children” or “can’t you be happy with the family you’ve got?”

The hormones sent me crazy and caused bloating. I was injecting and swallowing pills at all times of the day.

My husband supported me tremendously. He hurt when I hurt. He was sad when I was sad. He built me up and was my rock. My girls too, they at 9 and 4 were getting used to a new mental cased mother. A mother that was always in some kind of pain (the drugs did not agree with me at all) I remember sitting at swimming lessons watching my daughters class and feeling like I was poisoned. I lived with this month after month. Thank god not year after year.

Success

It took 4 rounds, with 1 miscarriage and one ectopic pregnancy,  to become pregnant with my son. I was lucky enough to harvest 21 eggs with 17 becoming fertilised. We used half IVF and half isci (direct injection of sperm into egg) the pregnancy was most welcome to me.

However, my husband couldn’t rejoice until we were particularly safe in our pregnancy… you see, he was the one who had to pick me up every time we lost the baby, or the embryo’s didn’t take.

We put 2 eggs back in every time, our rationale being that we would much prefer the elation of a twin pregnancy than only putting one back and it not taking.

Luckily for us, my adorable son as an embryo stuck and he grew into the amazing little human being that he is.
His father, big sisters and I appreciate him daily. My youngest still says to me “I can’t believe he is here – I still can’t believe it”.It fills me with joy to see our family complete. Without him. It wouldn’t be.

This is the downside of IVF. When do you stop? When the money runs out? When your will is spent?

Trust me when I say that when going through IVF, it’s difficult to take or hear negativity from those around you, even from those who love you and those who you know only want the best for you.

Thank God I have my son, because I fear that I would still be on that IVF rollercoaster now trying for my third darling baby.

Bel Messer is a Mother of 3. She and her friend Rosie, are authors of a book ” I am Extra Special. An IVF Story”, which is aimed at children aged 4-10 years and explains how they were conceived using IVF. It is a beautifully illustrated story book dedicated to all the “Extra Special” babies of IVF.

Image: Tommee Tippee Click And Twist Nappy Disposal System, €19.99 (was €32.99)

While a nappy bin is not a truly essential item, I personally found it invaluable. We lived in an apartment with a newborn and it saved a trip out to the bins after every nappy change!

This Tommee Tippee Click and Twist Nappy Disposal System is reduced to €19.99, and you can also stock up on the refill casettes.

Travel Essentials

Dunnes baby event

From left: Chicco Trolley Me Stroller, €95; Babylo Bolt Stroller, €49.99

Get out and about with one of the strollers included in the baby event. These Chicco and Babylo strollers are both lightweight options at great prices.

Alternatively, skip the wheels and pick up a Chicco Easy Fit Baby Carrier, €24.99, which is suitable to use from birth.

Dunnes baby event

Image: Tommee Tippee portable blackout blind, €19.99

Another invaluable item is a portable black out blind – we used ours far more than I thought we would!

At just €19.99, the Tommee Tippee black-out blind is an easy pack to bring on holidays, to a childminder’s, or just a quick fix to darken baby’s room for daytime naps.

Dunnes baby event 2

From left: Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature healthcare kit, €16.99; Changing bag, €20

Nail clippers, thermometer, nasal aspirator, soft brush…this nine-piece Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature Healthcare Kit is a no-brainer. Plus it comes in a pack that makes it the perfect travel kit.

A changing bag that holds all your new essentials is worth it’s weight in gold! This neutral bag, €20, has plenty of pockets to hold everything and an adjustable strap that means you can wear it cross-body for when you need both hands free. Note: this is an online only item.

Sleepwear and Essentials

Dunnes baby event

Image: Grow bags (various styles), €10 each

Skip the blankets that inevitably get kicked off and try a grow bag instead. There are several patterns to choose from and two tog weights available, 1.5 and 2.5, to keep baby snug.

Dunnes baby event

From left: Tommee Tippee Gro Clock, €26.79; Tommee Tippee Gro Egg with USB, €20.09

The Gro Egg is a great purchase for baby’s nursery, and one of the items many of our mums recommend. The colour-changing room thermometer can tell you at a glance whether the room is too cold, warm or the perfect temperature.

Another great visual for older children is the Gro Clock that acts as a sleep trainer, letting toddlers come to grips with the difference between ‘night’ and ‘morning’.

Dunnes breast pump

Charlotte Hanley is a mum to three gorgeous boys and explains her birthing story with her youngest son, Daithí. Charlotte takes us through the moment she discovered her beautiful little boy was born with Down syndrome.

The mum-of-three describes how Down Syndrome Limerick (DSL) stepped in at one of the most vulnerable stages of her life to offer their unwavering support, services and kindness. She applauds their innovative leaders and how they unite a community through their incredible work. Here is Charlotte and Daithí’s story.

“He was Daithí, My Son, My Child”; One Mother’s Story with a Down Syndrome Diagnosis

It was Good Friday and my last day of work as I was going on maternity leave. With three weeks to go, I was throwing a big Easter dinner for my family. After the holiday, I would have time to relax before the baby arrived; as much as possible with two older children, that is!

But it was not to be – Daithí Jack Hanley had other ideas! Easter Sunday morning whilst preparing the lamb for the hoard of people descending upon us, I started to have contractions.

When I got to the hospital later that evening, the midwives prepared the water bath, dimmed the lights and we were on for the most Zen birth ever, and it was. I held him as he made an appearance into the world and when I saw him my heart nearly stopped.

I did not recognise the baby before me. The baby I had given birth to had Down syndrome. I could see his little almond-shaped upturned eyes. That couldn’t be right! I could hardly talk – How could this have happened? Where was my healthy child; the one like my other two boys!?

I Was The Best Person to Take Care of Him

What followed was around 36 hours of tears, sadness and endless questions. No newborn snuggles – just a pain in my chest. The baby wasn’t feeding well and had to go to NICU. We went to see him shortly after he was taken to NICU and met a doctor who told us he needed antibiotics.

He was hooked up to lines and oxygen, and he would be in NICU for five days. I broke down in tears, I tried to go into the little room where he was. I told her he was fine; that I would take him back to the ward with me; my baby was fine and I was the best person to take care of him.

“My baby” – those words aroused a feeling that had not been there until that moment. He was not “that baby”, or “the baby”. He was Daithí, my son, my child and I realised that all that mattered was that I loved my beautiful boy – regardless of how many chromosomes he had.

Battling to Breastfeed

Down Syndrome

What followed were days of battling to breastfeed. It was the only thing that I felt I could do for him. The lactation consultant was amazing, going above and beyond for me, putting me in contact with other mothers who had successfully fed their children with Down syndrome and who had to battle with hypotonia (low muscle tone), pumping and positioning to make latching less exhausting for their babies.

When I went back to the ward, one of the nurses would sit with me and talk to me for far longer than she needed to. I started to feel this support from others which I had never felt before – ever in my life – people that I did not know, reaching out to help me wade through these unknown waters.

As we were preparing to take Daithí home, it was discovered that he had duodenal atresia, a blockage in his stomach. All that hard fought for liquid gold was just sitting in his stomach and not getting into his system. We waited for an ambulance to transfer him to Crumlin. At only a week old, he had an operation and spent three days in intensive care.

Down Syndrome Limerick Made Contact

The days after the operation were the most difficult days of my life. We still had many emotions running around our heads. Louise, the Parent Link Liaison person from Down Syndrome Limerick (DSL) made contact with me.

Louise contacts all parents in the Limerick region that have had a baby with Down syndrome and is trained to listen and support them. Her daughter Ameliya had the same operation as Daithí shortly after birth, and she was so positive about everything.

Louise was in touch every couple of days. She was so kind, so empathetic; answering my questions and addressing my concerns. Louise came to visit us when Daithí came home from the hospital. He was one month old. She scooped him up and didn’t leave him out of her arms for the whole time she was with us.

We Felt Welcomed and Part of The Community

Down syndrome

She was besotted with him too. It was reassuring to talk to someone that felt my feelings, that had been in the same situation and was out the other side. She was radiating happiness from her own life. She was living a life touched by Down syndrome and was perfectly happy, perfectly… dare I say it…normal.

I learned about the services on offer in Down Syndrome Limerick – Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, parent and baby sessions, counselling etc. We received an invite to a family fun day organised by the charity where we could meet other families. Accepting the invite, we went along and, from that moment, we no longer felt alone on this journey, we felt welcomed and part of the community.

All these families had their lives changed; they found themselves travelling a different road. These families were truly accepting of life on this road and were more than willing to take our hand on those first few steps along with it.

Down Syndrome Limerick is So Deserving

Down Syndrome

Down Syndrome Limerick is parent-led. It’s blazing trails across Limerick if you ask me, shouting from the rooftops about how wonderful our children are. They are there to help and support you from the minute you find out about your baby’s diagnosis, right through school age and into adulthood. It is a small charity that receives no state funding.

It has innovative leaders willing to sacrifice their time for the betterment of the overall community so that people with Down syndrome have the support they need to achieve their maximum potential and to live life as independently as possible. DSL is so deserving of this charity of the month award. I don’t know where we or the other families would be without DSL.

Support Down Syndrome Limerick

Down Syndrome Limerick Event

To help families, just like the Hanleys, you can support Down Syndrome Limerick by getting your runners on to join their virtual 21k in 21 days. The event starts on March 1st and ends on World Down Syndrome Day, March 21st. Register for the run now, and raise some much-needed funds for the charity through walking or running.

If breaking a sweat doesn’t appeal to you, you can text DSL to 50300 to donate €2 or click the link to donate as much as you would like.

To find out more information about becoming a member of DSL or discovering the services and work that they do, check out their website. To get in contact you can also email them.

Mums’ Most Useful Baby Items

Grobag

Grobag sleeping bag for most useful baby items

Grobag baby sleeping bags are very popular with parents of babies and toddlers. No more dealing with blankets and swaddles that get stripped off, as the Grobag stays on and regulates your child’s temperature. Different tog warmth ratings mean you can have varied weights for the changing seasons.

“Grobags were definitely worth the investment, we couldn’t do without them.”

Breast Pump

Pumping allows mums some flexibility when it comes to feeding and can also help with supply issues.

Several breast pumps in particular were mentioned by parents, including Haakaa, Medela and Elvie.

Video Monitor

There are many baby monitors to choose from, ranging from basic noise/sound monitors to video monitors you can check via an app on your phone.

Most parents commented that they had chosen a video monitor for the added peace of mind that they could see their baby, without going in to possibly disturb him/her.

Chicco Next2Me Crib

Chicco Next2Me Magic

The Chicco Next2Me side-sleeper crib received several votes from mums who found it invaluable for night feeds and middle of the night cries.

“The Next2Me Crib was definitely the best thing I ever got when breastfeeding, because I didn’t have to move to get the baby.”

Nipple Cream

Undoubtedly, nipple cream was a popular response from mums who had experience of breastfeeding.

“My Expert Midwife nipple cream was amazing for the first two weeks of breastfeeding. Lansinoh was recommended to me, but I couldn’t use it for the first weeks because it dragged on my skin.”

You May Also Enjoy Everything You Need To Know About Breastfeeding A Newborn

Feeding Pillow

Feeding pillows are great for supporting baby during feeding or just during cuddle time, particularly for C-section mums.

These firm cushions come in a C shape and fit around your body to raise baby up for feeding. Breastfeeding mums, in particular, find this useful as it can be moved to either the front or side to support various feeding positions.

“I could not do without the horseshoe feeding cushion that I received as a gift. It was key to establishing a comfortable breastfeeding journey for myself and my daughter.”

Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo

Jumperoo

The Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo received multiple votes from parents, thanks to all the built-in sensory activities to keep babies busy. There’s lots to look at, touch and explore while they bounce and spin around to check out their environment.

Gentle Skincare Products

Product ranges from Weleda, Burt’s Bees and Aveeno were some of those mentioned by mums as being the most gentle for newborns.

Nipple Shields

Breastfeeding mums find nipple shields to be a real lifesaver, particularly in the early days as you and your baby get used to feeding.

These soft, thin silicone shields fit over the nipple during feeding to help minimise the discomfort caused by cracked or sore nipples.

Groegg

Groegg

The Groegg changes colour to let you know at a glance whether the temperature of a room is too low, too high or just right, helping you maintain a safe sleeping environment for your baby. As an added bonus it even works well as a gentle night light.

“I got one as a gift. I thought it was unnecessary at first, but the constant worry if baby is too hot or cold was gone with the Groegg.”

Baby Sling or Carrier

Many mums recommend a baby sling or carrier for when you want baby near you, but also want to have your hands free.

There are many choices here, including ring slings, stretchy wraps, Mei Tai slings and soft structured carriers. Check online for a Sling Meet near you, where there is often a Sling Library to try out different styles and what works best for you.

Changing Table with Bath

babylo smart changer for most useful baby items

Image: Babylo Smart Changer

A changing station with a built-in bath was popular amongst parents, who valued the all-in-one aspect. With everything in arm’s reach, it makes changing and cleaning baby much easier.

“We use ours everyday. I would be lost without it!”

Thermometer

A reliable thermometer, such as the Braun in-ear thermometer which received several mentions from parents, is an essential part of your toolkit as a parent.

Having a well-equipped first aid kit at home is essential, but do you know what’s needed? Download our FREE family first aid kit checklist now to find out.

Pregnancy Pillow

ClevaMama maternity pillow (1)

Image: ClevaMama maternity pillow

Full body pregnancy pillows, like the ClevaMama maternity pillow, are a great sleep aid for expectant mothers as they offer support for boobs, bump and back.

“I recommend a pregnancy pillow to everyone as an essential purchase!”

Muslin Cloths

You can never have enough muslin cloths! They are so useful for everything from cleaning spit ups to swaddling or even as a light blanket when out and about.

Tripp Trapp High Chair

Stokke Tripp Trapp for most useful baby items

The Stokke Tripp Trapp is an investment piece, and much more than a high-chair for those who have it. It can be used from birth through to adulthood, and is made to fit right in at your kitchen table (there is the option of adding a tray if needed).

Microwave Steam Steriliser

A steriliser kills the bacteria that can be found on bottles, teats and soothers that come into contact with milk (formula or breast) and your baby’s mouth. Sterilising these items is recommended until your baby is at least 12 months old.

There are several types of steriliser to choose from, mainly electrical or microwave. Mums mainly recommended the microwave steam sterilisers – they do less bottles at a time, but are quick and easy to use. Also, very easy to transport to take with you when needed.

A Notebook and a Pen

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but a notebook and pen was essential for mums. It is a great way to keep track of feeds (times and quantity), sleep times, and more.

“A notebook and pen to keep track of feeds was always with me.”

White Noise Machine

Marpac Hussh white noise machine for most useful baby items

Image: Marpac Hussh white noise machine

White noise is low intensity background noise that you can’t really identify – the washing machine, the vacuum, the hairdryer. This can be relaxing for any of us to fall asleep to, and is particularly popular with babies and young children.

“We used the Marpac Hussh white noise machine for all naps and bedtime. I bought one for the childminder too. Would make a great present and we’re still using it 15 months later.”

Baby Chair/Bouncer

A bouncer or baby chair was a popular choice with parents as it was somewhere safe to put baby down when needed. The lightweight and portable aspect was key, making it a really useful baby item to have around the house.

Bandana Bibs

Nuby bandana bibs for most useful baby items

Image: Nuby bandana teething bibs

Bandana bibs work in just the same way as a traditional cloth bib, but have become increasingly popular with parents. Many of these bibs have a rubber tip to the point of the bandana, giving baby something to chew on when teething.

“We loved bandana bibs, particularly with the rubber bit at the end for chewing.”

  • Bumbo seat
  • Swaddle wrap/blanket

If you have a friend or close family member with a bump/new baby and you’re looking for a nice gift, these 12 suggestions for low cost or free gift ideas for new mothers are bound to be well-received. And mums having their second, third or beyond child would also appreciate these!

Of course it’s so nice to receive gifts for your newborn baby, but a little TLC for the mum is also gratefully received. My brother and sister-in-law offered to look after our first daughter when she was only a few weeks old so we could go to see a movie. It was one of the best presents we got!

Designer baby gear and high-end items are stunning, there’s no doubt – however, babies grow out of things quickly and new mums will ALWAYS appreciate a meal they haven’t had to cook themselves. These gift ideas for new mothers are guaranteed to be well-received!

Low Cost or Free Gift Ideas for New Mothers

#1. Offer to Cook Dinner

Cooking dinner for the new parents is a lovely gift, it saves them even thinking about that while they get used to new baby and a new routine.

Freezer-friendly meals that are healthy, filling and easy to eat while juggling a new baby are particularly great.

“When my best friend had her little boy I made lasagne, shepherds pie, stew, portioned it and brought it to her. She said it was the best gift ever.”

#2. Vouchers for Babysitting

Vouchers for babysitting always go down well. It doesn’t even have to be for a night out, it could be an offer of babysitting so they can shower or sleep!

“I got the best present ever off a friend when I had my little lad a few months ago. She made vouchers for free babysitting, doing my shopping for me, making me dinner and bringing me out for the day for lunch. Thought it was the nicest gift I got, she really thought about it.”

#3. Gift of Babysitting for a Weekend Away

When the new parents are in a routine and ready for a break away, if you can’t stretch to the actual weekend away itself, then an offer to take their child(ren) will be gratefully received.

“I gave a gift of a weekend away to a friend once for her and her husband, which included taking her children at the same time, so that they could go alone.”

#4. Help With Cleaning

Offering to help with some cleaning is also a present sure to delight any mum. It’s often the last thing any new parent wants to tackle!

“When my sister had her first, I cleaned her bathrooms – she said it was the best present I could have given her.”

#5. Pedicure

Whether it is before baby arrives, when the mother-to-be may not be able to reach down to her toenails, or afterwards for a treat to make her feel special.

“When I was pregnant, my man painted my toenails for me and that was a lovely treat as I couldn’t reach them with my bump!”

#6. Beauty/Hair Voucher

Give a voucher for their favourite spa or hairdressers so they can get a treat for themselves some time later.

#7. Travel Mug

A travel mug with a lid is perfect so she can keep her coffee or tea hot and near her while feeding the baby.

#8. A Nice Notebook & Pen

When you are in the fog of new motherhood, a handy notepad comes in very handy to jot down notes that you might forget, make the next shopping list or write down special moments to remember later.

#9. A Takeaway Voucher

Give the new parents a voucher for their favourite takeaway so that when they have a bad day and find it impossible to get round to cooking, they just need to order for home delivery.

#10. Hand Cream

With all the wiping and washing, a new mum’s hands can take a beating so a tube of her favourite hand cream is definitely a welcome gift.

#11. Photo Album/Photo Subscription

Your friend or family member will take so many photos of the new baby, it’s a nice idea to give them a photo printing subscription and/or a blank photo album ready to pop them into.
