Walks in Waterford to Enjoy

Fenor Bog

Designated as Waterford’s first national nature reserve, Fenor Bog is the unique habitat of many rare plants, birds and butterflies. Look out for dragonflies in summer.

There’s a boardwalk through the bog and a picnic area making it a nice place for a stroll and have something to eat afterwards.

Lismore Castle Gardens

While the gardens at Lismore Castle do require an admission ticket to enter, it is a lovely option for a family walk.

Two historic gardens are set within the Castle walls, encompassing 7 acres of stunning scenery. The lower garden, with a stately avenue of yew trees, has meandering paths through open spaces and meadows. The upper garden, entered through the Riding House, is a walled garden dating back to the early 1600s. Here you will find a mix of ornamental borders and productive areas, with vegetables, herbs, fruit and flowers grown for the kitchen and Castle itself.

The Castle itself is a private residence, although your garden ticket will also allow entry to the Lismore Castle Arts, a contemporary art gallery which hosts temporary exhibitions.

Woodstown

Woodstown beach runs for miles along the Western shore of Waterford. It is a great place for swimming when the tide is in, making it the perfect day trip for families when the weather is nice.

It is also popular for long walks, picnics and it is rich in sea shells, which are great for the kids to collect or to use for decorating sand castles. Parking is also available.

Ardmore Cliff Walk

For a longer walk, take the 5km Ardmore Cliff Walk which begins just after the Cliff House hotel car park, follow the road to where it becomes a path leading down to old ruins.

The walk brings you along cliff-top paths, minor roads and laneways past Ardmore Round Tower, one of the best preserved in Ireland. You’ll also pass a 12th Century Cathedral and a lookout post with stunning coastal scenery.

Copper Coast European Geopark

The Copper Coast Geopark is one of 42 designated European Geoparks in Europe, one of the 77 Global Geoparks, and it is the only one in the Republic of Ireland.

There are lots of walks within the Copper Coast Geopark and you can download the trails with maps and photos and explore the Copper Coast by yourself. There are also guided walks in the summer months.

For an easy walk head to Bunmahon, where in the little park, you will find flagstones with little stories about the Geopark and things that have happened over time which are fun for kids to find and read. For example, when the first four-legged animals emerged from the sea or when horses first appeared or when man began walking.

Faithlegg Woods and Minaun Hill

Faithlegg Woods, or ‘the Minaun’ as it is sometimes referred to, overlooks the meeting of the ‘Three Sisters’, otherwise known as the rivers Suir, Nore and Barrow.

Whilst there are no marked walks, there are plenty of trails through the woodland along old tracks which are easy to moderate. If you feel like a climb, then Cromwell’s Rock on Minaun Hill, located 200m from the main parking area, offers spectacular views.

Waterford Greenway

The Greenway is a spectacular 46km off-road cycling and walking trail along an old railway line. You can take a stroll at any point, from the quays of Waterford all the way through to the historic port and seaside town of Dungarvan.

Along the way you can spot Viking settlements, medieval ruins, a Norman castle, deserted railway stations, an Ice Age rock with ‘mythical’ powers, bridges, three viaducts, and a 400m tunnel.

Mount Congreve House & Gardens

Mount Congreve House and Gardens, in Kilmeaden, comprises around 70 acres of intensively planted woodland, a 4 acre walled garden and 16 kilometres of walkways.

Planted on a slight incline overlooking the River Suir, Mount Congreve’s entire collection consists of over 3,000 different trees and shrubs, more than 2,000 Rhododendrons, 600 Camellias, 300 Acer cultivars, 600 conifers, 250 climbers and 1,500 herbaceous plants, plus many more species contained in the Georgian glasshouse.

Comeragh Mountain Walks

The Comeragh Mountains are a remarkable and varied range, stretching from the coast near Dungarvan inland as far as Clonmel.

The 2.4km Crouhan Walk offers superb views over Dungarvan and Helvick, while the shorter 4km Coumshingaun Lake Walk (the full route is 8km) is worth the 250m ascent. On a clear day this lake, with the cliffs on three sides, is a wonderful sight.

Curraghmore House

Curraghmore House is the historic home of the 9th Marquis of Waterford, and comprises 2,500 acres of formal gardens, woodland and grazing fields.

The Shell House is an eye-catching addition to the Gardens, with intricate patterns of shells from all over the world used to decorate the walls of the interior by the Countess of Tyrone in 1754.

The formal gardens are a stunning backdrop to your walk, however the woodland walk offers more space. Keep an eye out for beautiful bluebells and wild garlic, as well as vast array of trees, shrubs and plants.

Mahon Falls

Mahon Falls is an 80m waterfall nestled in the Comeragh Mountains near Lemybrien. The dramatic waterfall, which is surrounded by breathtaking beauty, makes this a trip not to be missed. Visitors can also see sheep and goats dotted along the mountainsides.
