Irish Language Programs to Watch Online or On TV

TG4 (TV, Website & Cúla 4 App)

The TG4 website is a good resource for all levels of Irish along with the channel on TV. The site is bilingual and really easy to navigate.

And for younger children, the Cúla4 website is full of programmes, competitions and resources in Irish. It’s perfect for preschoolers and primary school-aged children. With over 200 hours of top quality Irish language content, that can be watched at any time, including cartoon favourites like SpongeBob Squarepants and Alvin and the Chipmunks, as well as factual content on science and nature.

There is also the Cúla4 App for iOS and Android, which enables younger viewers to access Cúla4 at any time of the day that suits them (or their parents!).

RTÉ (Website & App)

Our national broadcaster has a wealth of programmes and podcasts in Irish, and resources on their website for all levels of Irish.

For younger children, check out RTÉ Junior. You can play, watch and listen to Irish (and English) programmes and much more. They also offer a free app perfect for kids of all ages to enjoy safely.

Bolinda’s BorrowBox offers a huge range of adult and junior eBooks and eAudiobooks. They have a good selection of Irish language books for children. Simply register with your library card number and PIN.

The WalkerEireann channel on SoundCloud channel is a great way to get young children listening to familiar stories through Irish.

Séidéan Sí

Séidéan Sí is an amazing resource for primary school children.

When you log on you will be asked to choose your dialect. You can also choose the class your child is in and can then choose activities relevant to their age and level of Irish. This includes reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Scoilnet

Scoilnet is the Department of Education and Skills (DES) official portal for Irish education. Here, you can search by primary and post-primary for resources relevant to your child’s class and subjects.

During school closures, there is currently also free home access to students to World Book Online. World Book is a trusted encyclopedia containing thousands of informational articles with stunning illustrations, videos, interactive maps, research help, and activities.

Futa Fata

Futa Fata is an Irish language resource bookshop and website with books, CDs and a blog, along with free school resources – all approved by teachers.

From the website, you can order popular books that have been translated into Irish, including books from David Walliams, Julia Donaldson and many more authors. Some are also available in audio format.

Twinkl

Twinkl is one of the world’s leading resources for schools and those learning at home. The teacher-created content provides entire schemes of work, lesson planning and assessments right through to online educational games, augmented reality and more.

During school closures in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, use Twinkl’s Home Learning Hub, and Twinkl Go! for free. The Home Learning Hub provides a range of resources including worksheets, crafts and educational games. For the parents, there are useful guides to help navigate the curriculum.

Twinkl Go! provides a variety of interactive and audiovisual resources suitable for all ages and covering all subjects. This collection offers hundreds of games, videos, audiobooks and activities, which can be completed on any device.

To get access to the resources on the Home Learning Hub or Twinkl Go!, individuals need to create a free log-in using an email address and password.

Abair

If you are not a native Irish speaker or are unsure about the pronunciation of a word, Abair.ie is the perfect resource site.

There are 3 different dialects to choose from, Donegal Irish, Galway Irish and Kerry Irish. Simply enter the word you wish to pronounce and the website will say it back to you as often as you like until you have perfected it!

Tuairisc

Tuairisc.ie is useful for those who have some Irish and are looking to learn more about news, sport, culture, politics and more.

For younger children, they have a section Siamsán sa mBaile with fun activities as gaeilge, from recipes to challenges and diary pages children can complete in Irish and have fun.

GillExplore

During school closures, educational publisher Gill Books has made their digital resources available online at GillExplore, including workbooks, skills books and readers for all primary school ages including Réalta Litriú and other Irish language books on the curriculum.

Other books from school your children may know include Sounds Good Phonics, Word Wizard, Cracking Maths, Tables Expert and Super Sleuth.

Indeed, most school book publishers include a code on every book to allow online access to the student when they log on and enter the code. There is usually a parental permission email sent to the parent before access is granted.
